Title: heightmaps, booleans
Post by: beacon on July 14, 2016, 12:38:16 PM
After watching this incredible video by Julius Horsthuis I decided to pick his brain a little bit about how he managed to combine meshes with fractals inside Mandelbulb 3d:

https://vimeo.com/173523597

His reply was that the photogrammetry is imported into M3D as extruded heightmaps and the whole constitutes a boolean operation - from what I gather, determining where the fractals grow.

He did say this was a fairly complex and lengthy procedure and he might look into doing a tutorial, which is very kind of him, but I can't wait for that :D

Can anyone here fill me in on how this works? How does one import heightmaps into M3D and extrude them? What's the setup for a boolean operation inside M3D?

Many many thanks in advance.

There are tutorials and example files (quite a few) on Facebook in the group Mandelbulb Maniacs
Look them up they have more resources than you can imagine

Hope this helps.
