Wow! That is awesome!
This deserves to be printed and put on the wall.
Love it!

Where can I order my 36"x28" poster ???
Seriously! It's a fractal fanatic's "gotta have" item.

This is super cool bill, as you hear people want high res, this could even be a superb entry for upcoming contest, however, this is the second image that should be featured by us -the other one is the super high res cinematic mandelbulb pic postet a few compos ago - i think i prepare a dedicated gallerx section soon when i am back from sweet italy holiday for such remarkable resources

wow, thanks everyone for the great responses! :D This is something I worked on for a really long time, so it's great to have such good feedback from this forum, because you are the ones I want to impress the most! I do have plans to make it into a poster - I am currently considering doing a Kickstarter campaign to fund the initial print run. I have a website already set up (I would have posted it before but didn't want to be too spammy)... anyways if you go there you can sign up with your email to be notified when the poster is actually available.

hey bill!
good to hear..
why a kickstarter campaign? there are online solutions to produce posters, like zazzle.com
Or you could just take orders on your page (free wordpress plugins available) and then just place that order via one of the many online-foto services, with an extra delivery adress, billing to you?

Whatever you choose - here's your first pre-order.. :) Please make sure that you have shipping options to europe/germany (that are not more expensive than the poster itself)

edit: oh and I'd recommend posting this to
https://www.reddit.com/r/fractals
and  https://www.reddit.com/r/fractalporn
pretty sure this will spark quite some interest there.
when you're ready (if you don'T have a reddit account yet, make sure to build up a normal profile with regular posts, before self-promoting, or your posts won't show up. Or ask someone to post it for you)

Well, I am dreaming big and want to get an offset print run done. Offset printing gives crisper details and a protective coating - it will be a commercial quality poster, and I will wind up with a whole bunch of them that I can distribute - but it's pricey to get done. It's kind of a risk because I will need to sell a lot of them to make it worthwhile, but I have high hopes. My file is 300 dpi at 36 inches wide, it's going to be awesome.

Thanks! There will be posters available through the Kickstarter campaign, and after that on the website. Shipping will definitely be worldwide.

Ah yes, reddit, interesting place... I joined a little while ago and posted what I thought was a cool fractal, it turned into a bit of an argument... lol :evil1:... well I definitely have their attention now https://www.reddit.com/r/fractals/comments/47kpjf/awesome_fractal_formed_by_tracing_all_roads_back/

nice. yep, it deserves the quaility you are heading for and kickstarter is a good way to reach that goal. I'll definitely back you!

also: those guys at reddit arguing that one of the greatest examples for fractals from the last months isn't a fractal because not endless - they won't be able to argue on you m-set-map..
And besides that , let them starve in the mathematical realms. ;) i prefer to live in reality. where we can ovbserve fractals, no matter if some math-freaks don't want to call/define it that way. After that upped my blood pressure  :fiery: I upvoted everything good in that thread. which helped.. O0

This is epic. I'd totally be down for a frameable poster. Be sure to make it a standard poster size so those of us who are thrifty can simply grab a ready-made frame from an art supply store.

Since you are doing a KS, to reach the widest audience, I would consider offering the option of cheap poster prints in addition to fine art quality Giclee. I would buy the Giclee print myself, knowing the quality of these from first-hand experience.

I have no idea, but I had Giclee prints of three of my fractals made through Deviantart. The colors really pop!  O0

Thanks! The poster that I am doing offset printing for will be 36"x24" which is a very standard size in the US, like when you go to Walmart that's the size of the posters there. As for the colors, this is a muted palette anyways so CMYK will handle it just fine - I've already ordered some offset printed postcards of the map from the same print house and they look great. It's hard to match the crisp details and professional finish of offset printing. These posters will be reasonably priced for people to grab one or more.

And like you suggested, I am planning to offer an additional more expensive print, in the form of a digitally printed 54"x36" poster on photo paper. That's also a fairly standard size. I will have to check with them to make certain, but I'm pretty sure they are using giclee inks! :dink: I've already got one of these monsters on my wall and it's super cool, the colors look fantastic.

Title: Re: a map I made of the Mandelbrot Set

Depending on the final price of the more affordable versions, maybe certain museums might be interested in the poster as some sort of merchandise? I'm thinking of the Exploratorium ( https://www.exploratorium.edu ) and similar establishments (e.g. http://www.universum-bremen.de/?lang=en ). At least the math centric Mathematikum in Giessen, Germany ( http://www.mathematikum.de ) should be interested.

I do not have direct contact to any of these. Merely a suggestion.

The 36"x24" poster will definitely be available for sale after the Kickstarter, through the website www.mandelmap.com
The 54"x36" digital print may or may not be available for sale afterwards. The huge print makes a nice pledge incentive for Kickstarter but in the end is not so cost-effective for me... a lot of it will be determined by how much demand there is for the large size.

That's certainly a goal of mine, to get various stores selling this poster for me. I will be able to offer bulk discounts for distributors...

I dunno. The 54"x36" print takes up serious wall real estate but would be perfect for establishments. I've got so much on my walls already, that I'll have to take the 36"x24". It seems the perfect size for home display.

Title: Re: a map I made of the Mandelbrot Set
Post by: billtavis on March 29, 2016, 12:14:49 AM
yeah I definitely agree, I always planned this as a 36x24 poster from the get-go... The large size is like a specialty option if people want something a step above (and have empty walls lol)
By the way, I checked and the print company doing the big 54x36 posters is using "specially-engineered giclée pigment inks, paired with brand new high gamut 8-ink technology"

Title: Re: a map I made of the Mandelbrot Set
Post by: stardust4ever on March 29, 2016, 12:30:50 AM
8-inks? My understanding was professional CMYB printing used six colors, low and high intensity Cyan, low and high intensity magenta, yellow, and black. What is this new "8-color" system?

Title: Re: a map I made of the Mandelbrot Set
Post by: billtavis on March 29, 2016, 02:20:35 AM
Old school color printing is CMYK, which is 4 inks. This does well enough with low saturation colors like this poster, but struggles when people try to do really saturated colors like deep reds or blues. So, some printers have started adding additional ink colors, which allows them to reproduce a much wider color range. 8-ink giclee prints are like top-of-the-line stuff as far as digital prints go.

Basically what it comes down to is this: they are both very high-quality, professional prints. The colors will be slighter richer on the digital print and the details will be slightly crisper on the offset print. For this map in particular, I think crisp details have priority. Offset printing is what is used for basically all commercially produced posters, and it can reproduce a true 300dpi. The digital prints are 150dpi, which is plenty for the large size but gives the offset prints an advantage for the 36x24 size. I would do offset prints for the large size too, except that this would be a much bigger investment and I'm not sure I could sell enough of the large size to make it worth my while. Offset printing means ordering hundreds or even thousands of posters at once! So instead, I opted for a digital print. If it turns out that there is actually a huge demand for the large size I might consider investing in a run... I will also have to find space in my apartment to store a stack of giant posters! :tongue1:

Thanks for the great feedback guys! I am going to be launching the Kickstarter on Monday, April 18 - get in there early to save money on your poster! I will post a link here as soon as it goes live. In the mean time, here are some cool gifs for you to enjoy. To give the map a more human feel, I hired an illustrator to do some hand-drawn depictions of the commonly named areas of the set.

Very interesting. sepia antique incunabulum style is perfect for mandelbrot explorers.  how long do you take to make it??!? it seems already finished.

haha, very funny... but on a more somber note it seems like it may not be the 8-ink giclee I was promising either :sad1: The test prints I received were fabulous, but unfortunately on subsequent orders the colors kept coming out wrong and the print shop seemed unable/unwilling to correct it. Now I'm back on the search of finding a print house. So long story short, this only affects the extra-large posters, and whatever inks wind up being used I will still make sure that the prints are nothing less than top quality.

Thank you!! It took me about a year and a half to finish it, which was way longer than I was originally intending but I didn't want to cut any corners - my attitude was always, "it takes as long as it takes." And thank you for the links! That BibliOdyssey book looks very interesting

Pledged $20 on the kickstarter, looks like I'm the first one in. Since kickstarter is an all-or-nothing approach, is there a chance that it will be available for purchase in some other form if you're unable to raise the required $2,800 in 30 days?

Title: Re: a map I made of the Mandelbrot Set
Post by: billtavis on April 19, 2016, 01:16:39 AM
That's awesome! Thanks! Glad you could be the first  :D

If the project does not meet the goal, like you said it's all-or-nothing, so no one that pledged will get their poster and I will have to find another way to raise that money... which could take who knows how long... so this is a good reason to share it around and encourage others to pledge. But no matter what, even if it means taking out a loan, I am determined to make this thing happen!

EDIT2: $660 in less than two hours. You should have no problem reaching your goal. Looks like I'm #7 of 50 on the 36x24 posters... O0

Updated my pledge to the large version, since I was considering it already and this is taking off way faster than expected. I tend to assume that this forum is pretty quiet since there are only ever ten or so posts a day, really nice to see that something as relatively niche as this can raise so much in just a few hours.

Interesting to see that of the 25 academic projects listed on Kickstarter, this is the only one with the "project we love" tag on it from Kickstarter staff. Since it's already surpassed the funding goal after less than a day and still has 28 to go, do you have any plans for stretch goals given the attention it's received?

Good point. If demand is high enough, I can see additional runs being made even after the kickstarter. I've got in on the earlybird limited 36x24, I think I was the seventh to pledge at that tier but someone upgraded to the larger print, which may have dropped me to #6. Much as I love the idea of a 3x4.5 foot print, I'd have nowhere to hang something that big. I share a 3 bedroom house with my mom and I already have framed art stacked in the closet because there's no more room... :tongue1:

Thanks everyone! I really didn't know what to expect when I launched this thing and I am blown away by the response :w00t:

Since it's already surpassed the funding goal after less than a day and still has 28 to go, do you have any plans for stretch goals given the attention it's received?
I don't have any stretch goals yet, but it's a good idea - I am currently looking into what that entails and researching some options

If demand is high enough, I can see additional runs being made even after the kickstarter.
Absolutely! The Kickstarter is just to get this thing up and running - after that I plan to make the poster available indefinitely. My ideal goal for the distant future is to land a deal with a big-time poster distributor that can get this into poster stores everywhere. I can dream, right? But until then I will be selling them myself through my website...... And if I win the lottery it will be free posters for everyone! But don't hold your breath because I never buy lotto tickets  :evil1:

Agreed. Lotto tickets are a sham. Payout is always less than the buy in, especially after taxes. Besides, you wouldn't spend our kickstarter monies on lotto tickets, would you???

Here's a fun idea for a game of luck... Mandelbrot dart boards. Throw darts at the board. If your dart hits a point within the set, payout is equal to the period of said mini or bulb. Hitting the main cartoid (period 1) will only earn you a free play. Determining whether or not the exact location of your dart is actually inside the set would be rather difficult with crude Earthbound measurement tools.

Just know that your chances of winning a Powerball jackpot are actually better than earning a truly high payout by striking within a deep zoomed mini!  :evil1:

Ok here's a teaser

:wow:

People seem to think that's a lot, but it really only comes close to scraping the surface of the infinite complexity of the set.
:mandel:

@Bill Tavis: Also nice to see you uploaded a decent sized preview in the OP for us fractal geeks to drool over. I hope you don't mind if I save the 1600x1067 pixel version as wallpaper for my 1600x1200 desktop. O0

tavis, how is your experience with cimg, do you like it?  im using magick++, and while you can certainly do a lot with it, the performance can leave plenty to be desired.  for instance image scaling seems to not be multithreaded and im pretty sure there is no vector code anywhere to be found in imagemagick, and when you do lots of supersampling such abysmal scaling performance is just the worst.  so im on the lookout for a great c++ image library.  it seems to be a hard thing to come by though.  multithreaded And vectorized, a nice c++ api, and plenty of functionality...it seems near impossible to get all these things in one package.  the one candidate that might fit all those things that i have found is vips, which i intend to give a try sometime.  when i was looking at cimg, it sounds like it might be okay, but its hard to tell from its webpage which doesnt give you much to go on.

IDK but Gimp (64-bit) only utilizes 13% of my CPU (8 core AMD Bulldozer), meaning it's single threaded. Saving a half-gigapixel fractal image as lossless PNG (typically I use 23040x23040 square or 30720x17280 widescreen ratio @530Mp, or a slightly smaller 25600x19200 4:3 ratio @491Mp) with maximum compression takes forever for the progress bar to finish, so I feel your pain. Having access to 16 gigabytes of 1867Mhz dual channel memory on your system definitely helps though for manipulation of huge images with multiple windows open.

The product of all the prime numbers less than 20.  :dink: Um... I don't think there was any real reason to do that I just like playing with numbers sometimes.

Yeah no problem, I'm glad you want to have it as your wallpaper! I gave the Geekdad author the same version, theirs is probably easier to grab because it doesn't have all that photobucket weirdness

I love it! But you have to keep in mind that most of my programming is self-taught and I only know so much. I don't know how to write multi-threaded or vectorized code, so I can't tell you if CImg is good in those areas. CImg was the first external library I ever tried after I did my first "Hello World" and it was so incredibly easy to use. All I had to do was drop a single header file into my project folder and include it. Done. And the code you write with it is super compact and easy to read through. After later using libraries like CGAL (amazing in it's own right), I appreciated these things even more.
As for performance, I think it is fast enough. I resize images all the time and it never seems unnecessarily long, and there is not only bicubic sampling but also other filters like Lanczos. There are probably libraries out there that more speed could be squeezed out of, but I use it for the ease of coding and the extensive functionality. I am always more for image quality over speed, and the library has always delivered in that aspect.

I also want to just thank everybody here that has shared and pledged already, it's really amazing how well it's doing! :thanks1: It's doing so well, that I added a stretch goal to get the larger size printed with offset lithography as well!

Congrats!  with 25 days left I think the stretch goal is not a stretch at all  :dink:

1. will these large ones, for those who have jumped on it right away, be signed and numbered too?
2. if the goal is not met can I opt back to my original pledge?
(the reason is that I don't really want a digital print and would prefer the smaller offset version over the larger digital version.)

...and thank you for making this available. :thumbsup1:

Thanks!
1. The early bird posters will be signed and numbered, the rest will not.
2. The way I understand it, Kickstarter does not collect any money until the funding period ends. So until that time, you are free to change
your pledge up or down as much as you want. But like you said, it's looking really likely at this point that the stretch goal will be met!

Hehehe, it works! I knew I'd seen that number somewhere before...
Code:
2 * 3 * 5 * 7 * 11 * 13 * 17 * 19 = 9699690
Quite a beautifully symmetrical number when expressed as Arabic numerals I might add.

Yeah no problem, I'm glad you want to have it as your wallpaper! I gave the Geekdad author the same version, theirs is probably easier to grab because it doesn't have all that photobucket weirdness

That 1600 pixel resolution is just right at the cusp of being able to guess what is written. I managed to decipher a couple of the text boxes before my eyes started getting fatigued.

They send out a survey sometime after the campaign is over where you fill out shipping details, Tshirt size, color, gaming platform, or whatever option is applicable to the item you will be receiving as a backer.

I got my giant version a while back and was waiting to get it framed before posting any pictures. Went to pick it up the other day and it's so huge that I can't actually fit it in my car to take it home. I'll post some images once I find someone with a truck or something to haul it back to my house.

Mine just arrived back from the frame shop today. Took over a month to get it back. Better late than never! ;D

Welcome! :dink: I know the frame is dark so it doesn't show up well in the photos but it's texture relief definitely complements the artful swirls on the medallion.

It's home, but heavy enough that I don't trust myself to hang it up on my own. Probably going to just hire someone this weekend to mount it professionally so I don't end up doing it wrong and ripping a big hole in my wall.

How much does the frame weigh? I used a 50lb mount (two nails) for my 36x24 frame. It had some nice weight to it but not excessively heavy. But that depends on the type of frame you got. A 54x36" frame not only is more than twice as much surface area, but would likely need a heavy frame and possibly wood backing to prevent flexing.

And if you matted it (I did not matte mine), of course the frame is even larger. They also sell a 100lb mount (three nails) and a 30lb mount (one nail) but I would not trust anything weighing near 100 pounds on a nail in sheet rock, regardless of what the mount bracket claims it will support.

Some stuff you really need to drill into the 2x4 behind the sheet rock, and for that you'd likely want to call a contractor.
