This is a dense zoom video of the Mandelbrot set. There are 2 editions of it. The regular "original" edition is just a zoom video like all others. The DeepDream edition is based on the regular edition. A deepdream effect was added to the video. I have searched youtube for deepdream mandelbrot zooms and I could find only experiments that I wasn't really satisfied with. I decided that a good deepdream mandelbrot zoom would need to be static in the sense that none of the deepdream effects should change, disappear or ignore the movement in the video. I wanted it to be just like a normal zoom, except that the environment is a little creepier, or more familiar maybe. (Is math more creepy than warped animals and collections of eyes?) Someone suggested me to start to make a normal deepdream zoom video from the first keyframe of a mandelbrot zoom, that is, to do "deepdream", "zoom in", "deep dream", "zoom in", etc. eventually getting rid of any detail from the first frame. He suggested, then, to interfere in this process by doing something like "deepdream", "zoom in", "blend in some of the mandelbrot zoom", "deepdream", etc. instead. This idea turned out to give the desired result.

I also decided to experiment some with generating gradients instead of making them purely by hand. I spent a lot of time on it but I still feel lazy for it.

O0  creepy but still very cool

very cool!
nicely done!
I don't find it creepy, but I don't find most of the deepdream images creepy, just totally fascinating..

Mind if I post this here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/deepdream/
or post it yourself if you have a reddit account.
this should get you a few more views..
(ah, I just saw, you already did :))

so you made the zoom pics with kf, then let deepdream dream about each single image and then you did the zoom manually with after effects?
sounds like a lot of work..

if you should ever do this again, go checkout the MIT Places 205 Set, which has more landscapes, no eyes, no dogfaces.. i find it works beautifully with the mset..
also, if you do this manually anyways, why not change the layers from time to time, to bring in more variation?

Every single keyframe was deepdreamed, which is one frame for every zoom (=magnification*2). It was a lot of work indeed, and a lot of time to wait of course.

Other image sets is certainly something to consider. The reason I didn't change the deepdream algorithm, for now, (if that's what you mean) is because that would make it more difficult to make the frames fit together, although not necessarily impossible.

Nice videos! The deepdream effect really looks like eyes.
On the zoom, there must be many millions iterations.

That was pretty epic! - I especially liked the "noisier" regions of the original zoom's Deep Dream equivalents: It often lead to very interesting imagery. (Mostly it was still just eyes, though, which is a bit unfortunate)
Another interesting thing to consider in re "the other training set"
What about trying both networks at once? That is, Deepdream with network 1, zoom, deepdream with network 2, zoom, ...
It would be the first ever collaboration of two neural networks and maths. :D

Alternatively, you could have both networks deepdream on every frame and blend the two resulting frames together.

Also, is it just me or is the forum-embedded YouTube player somehow incapable of fullscreen view? I had to change to YouTube to actually be able to click on full screen. For some reason the forum's embedded player has the fullscreen icon greyed out.

hmm, i have the problem as well, some issue with the embedding code, will look into it later
