Title: Jux 1.0 Julia/Mandelbrot explorer with lighting
Post by: xenodreambuie on May 16, 2015, 11:45:25 AM
Jux 1.0 is now available. It is a 2D Julia and Mandelbrot fractal explorer with advanced lighting options.
It has a variety of built in formulas, initially covering polynomial and polynomial rational functions.
It has a real-time Julia thumbnail explorer.
Real-time preview for most color and lighting changes.
Fully multi-core, and anti-aliased rendering.
Presets and memory spots for formulas, coloring and lighting.
The free version is fully functional except render size is fixed at 640x480.
Registering to unlock the render size costs $US24

Why did I make yet another 2D Julia/Mandelbrot program?
I wanted a Julia explorer (for Windows) that would be nice to use, have various formulas, and beautiful color/lighting options. It had to use distance estimation for the set boundary, and be able to color the boundary independently of other regions. Of course it turned out to be more complicated than I first thought, and evolved as I learnt more.

By 'nice to use', I mean designed with convenience in mind, and fun to play with using only a mouse and a few shortcut keys, without relying on randomizing or limiting the options.

Initially I was most interested in different Julia sets, then I understood the usefulness of Mandelbrots for navigating and the appeal of zooming in them.

Great program!
My question is - if I buy a program to 5 (for example) computers, can I expect that the price will be less for me?  ::)

Thanks!
Is that for different people to use, or just you using all the computers to render on? If it's only you, one license permits multiple computers so you wouldn't need to buy more than one. If it's for five or more people then we can do some discount - I hadn't thought about volume pricing for Jux yet.

I buy the program and install it on five different computers with different user names. At home, in the office, on a laptop in a country house in the bath - I have a guarantee that the program is not locked?

Yes, you can do that. I'm happy for you to render on more than one computer!

I bought the program, but the program says that it is not the correct key ...
Details in a personal message.

A very nice program, i like to play with it because i like sloped fractals very much :) The light/form effects are so great!!
I hope there will be following some more formulas in the future.

Thank you, Andrea! The first update will be minor improvements and fixes, while different types of formulas need more time to get right.

Hello! First place thank you for this awesome program, xenodreambuie.

I have a question. Maybe is a stupid question, but I don't know a lot about fractal programs.

When you run the program you can see a standard view of a normal fractal and down, at right, the "julia exploring" window. Well, when you point inside the fractal, you can see the julia window changing. Here is my question: How can you obtain the image that you see from the "julia exploring" window? In fraqtive program, for example, you just doble click. I tried a lot of things, but I don't get it. I think I am missing the correct and obvious answer.

Hope you can help me.

Greetings!

Thank you, Jakeukalane!

Shift-click a point to jump to the Julia fractal. It works in Julia mode too, though you might need to increase the Julia precision sometimes for that. Ctrl-drag a rectangle to zoom in. The extra hints for controls appear in the status bar at the bottom of the window, and that includes the options when the mouse is over the preview. I'm also adding a Getting Started topic to the help for the next update.

I have a question about xenodream....when will be released version 3.0? :embarrass:
I love this program but i think it's time to build a new version more powerfull, with more options and with a multi core engine.
anyway i'm going to evaluate jux and probably i'll buy it....the illumination tool for 2d fractals is a good idea!

Thanks! First I will have a Jux update to release, then XD 2.6 soon after, then I want to work on those features for XD 3. I have no idea when 3.0 will be ready.

I love the colourings!

Does it use pertubation? After the speed and deepzooms of Kalles Fraktaler, I don't know if I can ever step back to "normal" rendertimes..
And is it possible to make zoom videos?

Thank you! It doesn't use perturbation because it's meant to handle general formulas, although still built in. It uses extended precision (80 bit) so zooming is only to about 1016 anyway. I was always more interested in Julia sets of polynomial rationals, and only recently discovered the fun of zooming to interesting minibrots and how to choose sequences.

There is no animation support so it would be time consuming to make all the frames manually.

I'll buy directly 2.6 version, hope you'll do an upgrade from 2.6 to 3.0 as for the previous releases!

Anyway it's good to have the possibility to communicate directly with the software creator in this forum, it's very usefull.

I want to buy it but have to find my paypal account somewhere or pay by bank ;)  I have one question, I bought fractal software before but whenever there is a little problem with the hardware I have to 'ask' if they will send me a new key.  If I buy this software is it mine?  Do I have my own key, can I use it after I change something, buy a new computer for example?  I hate it to buy something and than I have to ask the company if they please will grant me a new (my own) license....! The last time it took about 3 weeks!   I will never do that again!
But beside all that, I wish you good luck and a blooming business!  :)

Thanks, Caleidoscope! Our keys are tied only to your name, so you don't need a new one for different hardware. And if you do lose it, just email me. You can also use multiple computers.

Just bought the program and I'm very curious.  I'm glad I can put it on my laptop as well that will give me more time to practice.  (and I'm sure I'm gonna need a lot of that ;))  But like we say in Dutch "Where there is a will, there is a way"
And thank you Thomas for your explanation I  will try not to ask you to many questions ;)

Will be possible to have a mandelbulb type holon in the next xenodream release?

There's a set of Juliabulb metamorphs in the Fractal category, named Triplex or Tripco because we called them triplex numbers to begin with. They need a holon with all scales 100 to work correctly. Mandelbulb is not practical because there's no simple way to calculate it with inverse iterations, which are the basis for all holon rendering in XD.

Fantastic! I'm trying lot of combinations with triplex and tripcon...it's perfect for my purposes.

Another question: with xenodream doesn't use all the cores in multicore cpu? I've got an i7 cpu with 4 core (8 threads) but if i activate the system monitor i notice that xenodream doesn't use all the cores. It also doesn't use multitasking capabilities of i7, infact it stops rendering or iterating functions when i launch another program or simply i use the internet browser.
It' a pity since i7 is a very powerfull cpu, perfect for 3d fractals and rendering.

XenoDream only uses one core for any process; full multithreading is a future project. It's just the main preview that only calculates when the main window is active. The full rendering, and lighting and effects all operate regardless of other programs.
