Title: 3D Fractal Renders
Post by: richardrosenman on November 24, 2009, 09:26:52 PM
This is a set of experimental 3D fractals generated with various software applications for the technical and creative exploration of computer generated abstract mesh creation.

All of these fractals belong to the quaternion, hypercomplex, cubic Mandelbrot, complexified quaternion and octonion renderings of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. Some others are based on iterative 3x3 matrices where power series are utilized for transcendental and trig functions. The color treatment for each fractal was decided upon by it's shape and form.

Nice lighting/environment effects, but the resolution of the fractal objects themselves seems very low, were these done from meshes ?

Hi David;

Yes, the main problem with exporting 3D meshes lies herein. Each of these meshes were in excess of a couple of million polygons and yet the resolution doesn't hold up. Any higher mesh density and the system shuts down unless you're rendering with +8 gigs of ram using a 64bit OS.

This is where the beauty lies of having your own raytracer that can generate AND render the meshes together, therefore bypassing the whole import / export process.

Or you need a renderer that will render from a mesh stored in huge file format - say tens of GB :)
It's possible to do that without 64-bit but I don't think anyone has yet, the closest I've seen anyone come to doing that is Buddhi using say 2000 2D slices at 2000*2000 resolution though that method's actually closer to using voxels really :)

those are some really nice renders :) a bit lacking in surface detail (hey, this is fractal forums) but the imaging is really nice and atmospheric, high contrast and colourful. great job!

Hi Richard, welcome to FF.

Love these too. The colours and materials are top notch.
