Title: Guide to the Inner Workings of the Mandelbrot-Set 1

During the last years and countless zooms with Kalles Fraktaler I slowly started to get a grip of the inner workings of the M-Set.
I don't know if most of you are already aware of this, and to most people on our (fractal;)) planet this knowledge probably is useless..
But I would have loved to have some kind of guide or map to the M-Set when I started discovering it.

There is the page by miquel, which I highly recommend to newbies:

But I was searching for some info about different yet similar zoom paths and how a small decision in the beginning does affect the later outcome.
so here we go:
1, left side shows the main bulb
2 right side shows the same area but on the 2nd circle.
this lengthens the end of every(!) branch by 1 extrabranch, with 2 sub-branches on each side. hard to explain, just take a close look:

3d is cool.. but the surface of the 2d-mset still seems to be relatively uncharted territory. lets change this!

nice, would be cool to see an illustration of the "morphing" features as well, e.g. 2 pathes from a starting location explaining how the morphing can be used

how did you map the farther zooms? by hand ?!

Isn't that exactly what I was doing?
2 different paths, showing how they affect the "same" structure..

how did you map the farther zooms? by hand ?!
you mean colour mapping?
yep. lot's of trial and error.
If there is a way to do this automatically, I'd love to know..

I don't understand what you mean by "morphing"..Isn't that exactly what I was doing?

and notice how the shape of the embedded julia changes. This is called julia morphing, or morphing in short. Although I think it's a too general word, because shifting the start point in the real/imag plane is also a kind of morphing. Which is (confusingly) called perturbation sometimes ....

Naming stuff brings pain, sometimes pictures or videos work better.

Short image tutorial on shape stacking. The paths intertwine! Do compare the end results and how they came to be. For experts, jump to the end and find the zoom path that was used down to e57. Good luck everyone.   :D

I didn't know that the technique even has its own name.. shapestacking..
It's so much fun to be able to actively shape your results, instead of just zooming in randomly.

Maybe you have the multipicture in a higher resolution?
I'd love to take a closer look..

in the picture below you see the stacked previous path very close to the minibrot.
I find  it fascinating, that even the number of shapes stays the same after each bifurcation. for example, I zoomed past 17 snake-shapes.. still 17 close to the minibrot..

Main PC crashed. Bought new MB and CPU, but crashed again. Now on laptop from work, but only M$ Windows and kinda locked down. So since I cannot install a damn thing, I'm only using third party software which runs without installing (the local IT guy at work is flexible ...). Sooooo, back to Kalles Fraktaler instead of Mandelbulber.

Dove into some low-level Julia morphing, trying to get as much variety without zooming very deep. At the moment I really like those "closed" shapes which spirals can make. This gives the illusion of bounded shapes, for example those frog like structures in the post above.

Have you tried to use "show inflection" to help you decide where to zoom further into a nice location?

No, but I did start to use "Find Minibrot" to skip some manual clicks. But depending on location, this does not always work. Sometimes the software thinks it find a center, and happy goes zooming further ... but it's not on the actual center. I will pay attention next time, to remember the type of locations where this happens.

I find that the auto zoomer fails when the spirals on screen have a higher iteration count than the "center" you want. I think that the  zoomer just zooms into the highest iteration.

Well, in that case I think the Mandelbrot-center-finder is not compatible with my current zooming method for Julia. I like high contrast between dense and sparse areas. Things like this:

This is just the half of the two-fold symmetry. The actual center is the small circle on the bottom-middle. With the Mandelbrot-finding function it zooms in on the leftmost dense spot.

These past few weeks the focus was on creating low level julias. Each time I more or less followed the following steps:

- Zoom into the Mset just a little to find a minibrot
- Zoom into a valley of choice to get interesting spirals (these lead to nice bounded shapes deeper on)
- Find a Julia without zooming too deep
- Start Julia morphing, each time on the new two-fold shape
- Never go to far away from the center for each new two-fold to morph

All raw fractals found and rendered with Kalles Fraktaler 2.7.9 at something like 7200px wide.

No, I more like to plan some kind of method or principle and dive in using that in mind. I think show inflection can't show multiple morph steps ahead, so that's why I don't use it.

The auto zoomer does try to find the center by mirroring parts of the view and select the position where it gets the lowest error when comparing iteration values per pixel.
However in dense areas there can be a huge difference between pixels, that destroys this method. Maybe comparing rgb values in the image would be more reliable also for dense areas
