Title: Fractal animation with generated sound
Post by: otheronenorehto on November 16, 2009, 06:26:56 PM
Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've gone exploring fractal developments online and I must say that since I started playing with Terry Gintz's software about 2-3 years ago hyper-complex fractals have come an amazing ways!  I came across this forum through a link from a friend.  Anyway I just recently finished a fractal animation that I would be very pleased to have you all view and give me feedback on.

The animation was made with Xoas using one of the Magnet variations and final cut pro.  The sound was Generated in Max/MSP based on the work of Roger Shepard and Jean Claude Risset (Bell Labs).  I sincerely hope you enjoy it.  I am looking forward to cruising this forum to see what other new work is out there!

Why do I only see a lot of coloured bars approaching each other (with some aliasing issues) and not a wonderful magnet fractal?

Why do I only see a lot of coloured bars approaching each other (with some aliasing issues) and not a wonderful magnet fractal?

The reason I chose this path is because was because fractal zooms are a dime a dozen these days.  I was more concerned with finding a unique perspective within the fractal.  That said my particular proclivity towards optical illusions, and the choice to use an auditory illusion in the sound also affected my decision.  My goal was to produce a sense of synesthesia between audio and visual.

The bars are not actually approaching each other (FYI) they remain the same distance from each other throughout the piece only the camera's position in relation to them changes.  I can not speak to anti aliasing issues except to ask if you were using the Youtube HD function on full screen (and your screen is at least 720x1280).

I worked painstakingly testing compression methods to find one that worked best and produced a product that met Youtube's size restriction limits.  So I was disappointed that you may not have seen the product I intended you to see.  I just discovered that youtube has a 1080 service.  Since the original footage was rendered in 1080p60fps I am excited to be able to finally present it in this format.  Expect a link in the next week or two.

I love how the bifurcations of the vertical bars synchronise at certain interwals to give you the "wheels spin backwards" effect.
