Title: finding the edges
Post by: flok on November 16, 2009, 05:50:10 PM
Hi,

I designed a nice 3D fractal. Now I would like to render it in povray to get shadow and lighting effects. For that it would be best to find the edges (e.g. the edge where it takes a finite number of iterations against an infinite number of iterations) of the fractal-blob so that I can connect those with e.g. triangles.
Has someone already designed an algorithm for that? For finding those edges? I was thinking of casting rays in the x/y/z directions of my fractal but then I won't "see" what is behind "hills" which is unfortunate if start to rotate the fractal.

Probably the best method for generating output in polygon form is to use Buddhi's method of rendering say 2000 2D slices at 2000*2000 - see the main thread on true 3D Mandy for details.
