lovely, isnt that available as 3d formula ? i mean it looks just perfectly suitable for a realtime rendering approach!
would make a great formula for continuous zooms :D

So far, I have found no way to come up with a DE approach for this kind of pictures.
The calculation of all the spheres in UF takes minutes to hours. Calculating a DE would be equally expensive...

so, you place them explicitly in a looping kind of way and have not found an implicit representation for the sphere positions?

No, you start with a base sphere, and all the other ones are transformations of the base sphere by Moebius transformations.
