Title: 3D fractal meeting in Tokyo
Post by: bib on August 09, 2014, 04:33:56 PM
Do you remember the first post of the most famous thread on fractalforums?

http://www.fractalforums.com/3d-fractal-generation/true-3d-mandlebrot-type-fractal/

That was in 2007. Daniel White was wondering if a true 3D Mandelbrot set could be done, and he gave the example of the quasi-fuchsian limit set, with a link to a video done by Yoshiaki Araki in 2002-2003.

This led to the discovery of the Mandelbulb in 2009 by Paul Nylander and then all the new generation of 3D fractals that made the success of fractalforums.

Today I met with Yoshiaki in Tokyo and we had a wonderful time together with our families, and of course lengthy discussions on our passion for 3D fractals.

Yoshiaki is really a pioneer in the domain and a world famous specialist in tessellations. He showed me a lot of fascinating and very early images he made, that even made me wonder if he shouldn't be credited for the discovery of the Mandelbulb, but that's another story...

He also showed me his fantastic collection of 3D objects and offered me a copy of his quasi-fuchsian fractal that he made in 2002 from a lost wax 3D print. Now that was groundbreaking work! Thanks so much Yoshiaki!

I love these international fractal meetings!

Nice that you got to meet!
What did he think of the hunt for the holy grail?

Cheers J!

What did he think of the hunt for the holy grail?

Would be good to have him tell us directly :)
I can say that his own research on 3D fractals started when he read the book Indra's Pearls and wanted to turn this fractal into 3D, this gave birth to the 3D quasi-fuchsian :

and send him best regards for his work! hats up!

I know he's having a look to the forum occasionally :)

@Yoshiaki, please register when you have time, that would be a honour for us to have you participate and explain to the community your viewpoint and what you showed me about the latest academic research and still unexplored fields.

Yes please!  :spgloomy:

PS: We are already able to do it in realtime now, thanks to GPU power, for the case where there is no loxodromic transformations. See Bulatov's (http://www.fractalforums.com/ifs-iterated-function-systems/fractal-limit-set-of-4d-hyperbolic-reflection-groups/) and my (http://www.fractalforums.com/ifs-iterated-function-systems/another-3d-kleinian/) work on the subject.  :embarrass:
What I would like to do is something like this (http://www.fractalforums.com/3d-fractal-generation/a-3d-kleinian-group/) but in realtime.  :headbatting:

Here is a picture done based on Araki's article (together with Ito) "AN EXTENSION OF THE MASKIT SLICE FOR 4-DIMENSIONAL KLEINIAN GROUPS".
