Daniel White was wondering if a true 3D Mandelbrot set could be done, and he gave the example of the quasi-fuchsian limit set, with a link to a video done by Yoshiaki Araki in 2002-2003. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3lcO9zRCv-4 This led to the discovery of the Mandelbulb in 2009 by Paul Nylander and then all the new generation of 3D fractals that made the success of fractalforums. Today I met with Yoshiaki in Tokyo and we had a wonderful time together with our families, and of course lengthy discussions on our passion for 3D fractals. Yoshiaki is really a pioneer in the domain and a world famous specialist in tessellations. He showed me a lot of fascinating and very early images he made, that even made me wonder if he shouldn't be credited for the discovery of the Mandelbulb, but that's another story... He also showed me his fantastic collection of 3D objects and offered me a copy of his quasi-fuchsian fractal that he made in 2002 from a lost wax 3D print. Now that was groundbreaking work! PS: We are already able to do it in realtime now, thanks to GPU power, for the case where there is no loxodromic transformations.
