Title: Explain your user name
Post by: Cyclops on August 31, 2009, 01:46:19 PM
Some names are self explanatory, while others need a littlle thought.
Mine comes from the fact that I only have one working eye. I was born with a faulty left eye so can only see thru the right one,and not brilliantly with that! It means I can't judge distances properly or see 3D stuff. I also tend to walk into things, even now at 42!
So whats the significance of your user name?

I guess "own name" needs no explanation :)
But I first used my other "handle", "Makin' Magic" when I did some software in the 80's for the Dragon computer - "Makin' Magic Music" (4 channel music on a Dragon) and "Makin' Magic Pictures" (for gfx - the Dragon had a maximum of 4 colours in graphics modes, and they were preset too, just a choice of 2 sets of 4 colours)

I was going to play men of valor online and needed a nickname, so the first thing I thought of was Dinkydau, a cheatcode for the single player version of the game.

HPDZ = High Precision Deep Zoom, the original theme of my website. I thought I would focus on deep-zoom animations only, but it has expanded in scope, and I wish I had come up with something different now. But at least I was able to snag a four-letter URL.

yeah right, that, and no computers to speak of...

When Scientific American came up with the first article about the Mandelbrot set, I was at university, trying to work out my diploma thesis at the theoretical subdepartment of something called "Institute for Pure and Applied Nuclear Physics" (approximately; it was in german, of course...). Our computer "power" consisted of ONE machine called PDP-11 made by Digital Equipment Corp., and was used with ASCII-Terminals, running a multi-user OS called RT11-Share (or something like that). Basically, MUCH less power than the cheapest working machine you can find in the market now, used with up to 8 users concurrently - talk about fast responses, really. We had one (ONE) color graphics terminal (265 freely chosable colors out of 32768; 640 by 480 pixels) and decided to try some mandelbrot and julia pictures. Main program written in FORTRAN, main loop written in assembler for speed; and people: it was FAST: 10 minutes for one picture in moderate zoom :).

We even made a little movie with julia pictures, with the parameter moving along the real axis from -2 to 0.25 then along the cardiod and the first circle. The movie was about 5 minutes, but it took about a month to complete, since everything had to be done as a background job - lower priority than printing. We couldn't do that as any kind of animation because it took about 10 seconds to load a picture into that color-terminal, so we had a little action over the last weekend and had the pictures photographed one by one (stop-motion at it's best)with somebodys super 8 cam, which was controlled by a little something soldered specifically for this task and connected to one of the serial outputs of the machine...

We were SO proud of that, really.
Wonder were that piece of film is now...

Those were the days - I'm so happy they are gone, really :)

Oh, nearly forgot: thanks to all for your congratulations...

Have fun
Karl

Congratulations to you, then :)

My username is nothing more than a good rhyme for "pyromaniac". If you want a definition, then look up "styrene" and add it to the root meaning of any obsessive disorder. Hoila!

My name is really nothing but a play on my own name, Stig. I must have been around eleven or something when I first used it, and since then I have used it everywhere on the Internet... Except for my blog, where my username is Sostotigog. If you want to, you can pretend it is an Irish twist, (Stig O'Master) but I'm from Norway, so it is really not.

 :dink:
My username is one I chose long ago for use on Lord of the Rings websites. I love LOTR (the book, much more than the movies-I'm one of those silly purists!), and my favorite flower is the daffodil....so, since I also like the Hobbits (including Frodo and Bilbo) in LOTR, it just made sense to put it all together!

If anyone's interested in seeing my latest fractal art, you can go here:

(For my Redbubble account, I finally chose a different username, autumngirl......I just really love Autumn!)

I originally used mine in Armagetron, a Tron Light Cycle game.
http://www.armagetronad.net/ (http://www.armagetronad.net/)
It also uses the letters WWW, which associates with the World Wide Web.
Which has no bearing on anything...  either, which fits perfectly with "CHAOS".  ;D

Bent-Winged Angel  Means that I'm "bent" in more ways than one.  Although not broken!

Mine has some obvious connotations - blame that Danged Philosophy Degree!

It also has some less obvious connotations to those of us with particularly twisted minds

I almost chose Playtoe, but ultimately went with the Teacher instead of the Pupil, partly because I just like The Socratic Method better than anything Plato claimed as his own ideas, and partly because there is no direct evidence Socrates ever existed outside the writings and imaginations of Plato.

I like the idea of a fictional character being considered one of the greatest thinkers of all time!

I chose fracmonk (in haste) because I work on a standalone, usually with fractint, and use library for very limited internet access.  Not in academia, I'm kinda isolated.  I've been at it since mid 90's when it seemed imperative to write your own generators with BASIC.  Took awhile to figure how to register, log on, and post in these circumstances.  Due to seasonal work, summer access for me will be very sporadic, but I'll do my best to keep in touch.  Have done very interesting stuff you have not seen yet. I know, since I have not been able to search out its likes anywhere, either.

Mine is quite easy, it is the name of my company which I started back in the summer of 1969.  It is the name I also use for my Domain Name and web space.

But even though my middle name begins with the letter "N", the word "Nahee" is not even close to what my middle name really is.  In fact, the word "nahee" is just a spelling in English to represent the sound of a Siamese word (Thailand).  Pronunciation:  that is not a long "a", but a short "a" sound, as in NAH-hee.

It is very surprising how my real name is within the signature of every posting, but people here call me "Nahee".  Guess they can not read that far down within each posting.    :D   :dink:

I'm obsessed with sound,  crashing sound.  I love thunderstorms and lightning. A lightning wave could make sense as a light wave fractal, but thunder wave makes more sense for music and I love music in a story sense of pure sound organized in time, which does not exist, so therefore my music is a waste of time. LMFAO!!!  ROFL!!!!  :what: :music: :rotfl: :whistle2:

Toad is [one of] my favorite x-men characters, Beast being the first.  However, I cannot compare myself to Beast, his greatness surpasses my own.  I also sort of look like Toad
