The majority of people who have any knowledge of the Delta Works are convinced that the Netherlands are protected by an intricate system of dikes, dams and storm surge barriers. How wrong they are. All these contraptions are nothing more than a big hoax to create a safe feeling for the Dutch. Sure, if you look at the Veerse Gatdam, it looks like a massive construction that won't be easily destroyed. But it's not.

It's just a matter of statistics. How often does a major storm happen? Once every 1000 years? No reason to invest in large amounts of concrete, is it? But after 1953, something needed to be done. A bit of window dressing. So it was decided to create a couple of floating devices in the major estuaries. And you know what? If you put a bit of sand, tarmac and vegetation on it, it actually looks quite convincing. But don't be fooled. This is what's below...
