Title: "Alien Tech" remake by eiffie
Post by: Kali on September 24, 2013, 12:12:28 AM
Here's a remake by eiffie of my "Alien Tech" shader.

Also good to show it for those who can't run shadertoys properly.

The rendering is not truly 3D, the fractal is 2D (Mandelbox-like) but there's a plane distortion to make the surface look curved, then the normals from the fractal are used for a diffuse+specular light shading, and orbit trapping (min distance to 0) for the yellow lights.

This remake includes more colors, more dancing lights, and some different parameters as well... Good work, eiffie, thanks!!!

very cool indeed - I love the lights behind, they really give a great expression of an alien city thing..

Nice one!!!  Especially liked the way the yellow lights were done.     :D
Though the "dancing" white lights became an unwanted distraction at times.

Great animation.
The glowing fractal surface reminds me of intricate stained glass windows

Yes the cool yellow lights were by Kali. Mine are the obnoxious ones :). Just showing how to add multiple lights without slowing it down. It is VERY fast! Nice script to work with Kali.

Thanks to all for the comments!

Amazingly fast... I just saw your remake at shadertoy, and I don't how I didn't see that I could calc normals and AA at the same time, that's a huge optimization.
Btw, making collaborative works could be a cool idea, and it's something I was just thinking of lately. Maybe we can try to do some more shaders toghether if you want, and see what happens :)

I like the collab idea too but in practice it can be hard. We can always post unlisted shaders and send each other the link with an email/pm. I'm still working online with an old laptop with NO gpu support. I'm really surprised it can run most of those shaders emulated. Anyways you can always hit me up for coding ideas - I like your outside the box thinking and great artistic feel. I'm lacking in the latter.
