Title: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 08, 2013, 08:15:28 PM At one point in time I owned all of the Amygdala Journal (sadly not complete as I let my subscription lapse :sad1:). Even worse in a living space reconsolidation (big house->little apartment) my collection did not make the transition :'( ! That said I'm looking for back issues. What I'd like is to pay for xeroxed copies that way neither party is bereft of a valuable fractal resource. Regarding slides that accompanied some (all?) issues, If you trust me, I'd scan them, then return them with the images as .png or .jpeg files. As to why I might do this, it is mostly because while much of what is available in terms of technique is quite good, I've found that some things discovered early on have not yet been implemented. Think of it as wandering through old mining claims and slowly gathering overlooked gold :dink:
--hsm p.s. I'm also starting to recover links to GEOCITIES Fractal Report as well. Yes Sturgeon's Law applies: 90% of everything is crap, but I'm collecting the 10% that is priceless :D p.s.s. For those who don't know who Rollo Silver was, consider that before many of you were born, Rollo was exploring the M-Set using an Apple-2e with an accelerator card! True pioneer in the finest tradition of 'Amateur'! Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: Nahee_Enterprises on September 09, 2013, 02:25:29 AM At one point in time I owned all of the Amygdala Journal.... I'm looking for back issues. Have you tried contacting Roger Bagula ?? He may have such documents lying around. I'm also starting to recover links to GEOCITIES Fractal Report as well. There seems to be a lot at: http://www.geocities.ws/fractalreport/fr.htm (http://www.geocities.ws/fractalreport/fr.htm) and http://reocities.com/CapeCanaveral/launchpad/5113/fr.htm (http://reocities.com/CapeCanaveral/launchpad/5113/fr.htm) For those who don't know who Rollo Silver was, consider that before many of you were born, Rollo was exploring the M-Set using an Apple-2e with an accelerator card! True pioneer in the finest tradition of 'Amateur'! Yes, I remember Roland Silver. Last I heard, he was located in New Mexico (either around Taos or Santa Fe). But not sure if he is still alive, because I believe he was born in the mid-1930's. He was a big FractInt user, and also used MandelZot. I do know that his old web sites are no longer active. Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 09, 2013, 07:18:11 AM Paul,
Thanks for the leads! I'd found the GEOCITIES links while searching for info on Amygdala ironically. Regarding Rollo, the obit in the Taos News said: "Roland Lazarus Silver, 80, (Rollo) of New York, Boston and Taos, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2008." And as near as I can tell he pretty much let go of the web sometime before 2000. I used to email back and forth with him about fractals and fine art as well. I really wish I'd gotten around to buying one of his high resolution fractal prints back then. --hsm Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: Nahee_Enterprises on September 09, 2013, 07:46:17 AM At one point in time I owned all of the Amygdala Journal.... Actually, I think it was called the: "AMYGDALA NEWSLETTER" - The Newsletter of the Mandelbrot Set. I seem to get more valid hits on searching under that name, than using the word Journal. Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 09, 2013, 02:05:11 PM Paul,
Color me :embarrass: But as I am the last person to trust my memory, not at all surprised! Thanks for the correction  --hsm Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Even worse in a living space reconsolidation (big house->little apartment) my collection did not make the transition :'( ! That said I'm looking for back issues. I have issues 31 to 35. I can scan them for you if you are interested. Another very interesting site which seems to have disappeared was the "Mandelbrot Dazibao" by the french programmer "Jark". It offered a lot of programs in QuickBASIC! I have a copy of the website if someone is interested. Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 12, 2013, 05:55:56 PM Yes! I'd be very interested. Tell me more about the Jark's website if you would :)

I'd also be interested - among my old school pursuits, I still run QuickBASIC in a DOS emulator because it was far easier to figure out the emulator than it was to learn another programming variant. ha ha Ryan Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: jdebord on September 13, 2013, 09:34:38 AM Hello hsmyers and Ryan D,
Thank you for your replies. I will send you the documents by e-mail (Ryan D, you can give me your email by PM). BTW, here are some links for the BASIC lovers: FreeBASIC: http://www.freebasic.net/ (http://www.freebasic.net/) QB64: http://www.qb64.net/ (http://www.qb64.net/) PANORAMIC: http://panoramic-language.pagesperso-orange.fr/ (http://panoramic-language.pagesperso-orange.fr/) Latest version of the PANORAMIC editor: http://panoramic-language.pagesperso-orange.fr/PANORAMIC_EDITOR.zip (http://panoramic-language.pagesperso-orange.fr/PANORAMIC_EDITOR.zip) My own fractal programs, made with PANORAMIC and FreeBASIC, with some data files from Amygdala: http://sourceforge.net/projects/panolib/panomand.zip (http://sourceforge.net/projects/panolib/panomand.zip) Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: lkmitch on September 14, 2013, 07:48:09 AM I use FreeBASIC quite a bit. It has a mode to support QBASIC and QuickBASIC language. One of these days, I'll learn a modern language. :-) And I'll see if I can find my copies of Amygdala.

One of these days, I'll learn a modern language. :-) You could take it slowly, a step at a time, and try Visual Basic (the Express version is free to download). Then move on to C++, and who knows, maybe C# and C.Net :D Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: jdebord on September 14, 2013, 09:58:51 AM I have now scanned issues 31-32 of Amygdala. There are 24 pages, for a total of about 9 megabytes. I will scan my other issues ASAP.

They were waiting for me with my morning coffee :D Thank you very much! --hsm Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: jdebord on September 16, 2013, 09:40:10 AM You will need some more coffee :) Issues 33-34 have been sent.
Also, I have uploaded an archive of the "Mandelbrot Dazibao" website to DropBox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ceigj2cc0gjl4h2/Dazibao.zip (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ceigj2cc0gjl4h2/Dazibao.zip) Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 16, 2013, 05:33:19 PM Jean,

I had no problems at all with the download. Worked just fine!!! :toast: Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? now it worked using the dropbox link... Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: jdebord on September 18, 2013, 09:14:09 AM I have also uploaded my Amygdala scans to DropBox. The link is:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/b6d2jg067a1dm1b/Amygdala.zip (https://www.dropbox.com/s/b6d2jg067a1dm1b/Amygdala.zip) There are only 5 issues (31-35) but it's all that I have. Hopefully, other people may be able to complete. Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: Nahee_Enterprises on September 18, 2013, 12:44:36 PM I have also uploaded my Amygdala scans to DropBox. Yes, it would be nice to make the whole set available for posterity. Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 18, 2013, 01:31:23 PM At some point I'll convert the .jpegs into .pdf and make them available as well...
In other news, :dink: I've managed to track down two libraries with issues. One is in Singapore and the other is the British Library. For my next trick I'll see if I can convince them that they should play as well :D --hsm Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? And I do not see why a library would not make copies and send them to you, especially if you are willing to pay for their time, trouble, and any expenses involved. Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues? Post by: hsmyers on September 18, 2013, 01:59:13 PM Paul,
That is certainly my hope, but you never know! For instance the British Library catalog entry specifies no copying (presumably copyright issues at a guess). But I've got an email into them at the moment and we will see what we see! --hsm p.s. the Singapore Library makes no such statement, so I might be luckier there---although I've yet to find an email address :embarrass: Title: Re: Amygdala Back Issues?
