Title: A question about 'Personalized Picture'
Post by: hsmyers on August 16, 2013, 05:54:04 PM
I've noticed that my attempt to upload a 'Personalized Picture' shows a image not found icon. Not sure of why, but this leads to the following questions
  • What are the acceptable file types?
  • What is the width and height of the image?

I've also noticed that some have images in their sigs. What are the rules/guidelines for that?

thanks,

Thanks Paul,

I was thinking more in terms of the user icon/image? Would that be a thumbnail?

Hi   O0

Those are called Avatars and can be 70 wide by 100 tall.  Try to keep the size "reasonable" as the software does not appear to put a limit on file size.  Just remember it may need to load many times on a single page  :police:

No idea why that doesn't show on the page where you can upload, or link to, them.

Thanks for the tip. Perhaps the text in 'Profile' could refer to avatars and include useful information like you and Paul have done. I suspect that the reason I get the 'image not found' pseudo icon is because it is the wrong size (by quite a bit come to think of it). I'll fool around a bit and upload something that hopefully works.  A  to you :)

I'm at a loss to understand the process of uploading an 'Avatar'. I've created a 70x70 image in both .jpg and .gif. Gone to modify my profile, selected an image and the 'changed my profile' only to see 'no profile selected'! What am I doing wrong?   :banginghead: :what: :help:

Not sure what may be going wrong for you, since I know it should be functioning correctly, once the following steps are performed:
  • Go to  "PROFILE"  from the "ribbon" at the top of the web page.
  • Choose  "Forum Profile Information"  from the  "Modify Profile"  section on the left-hand side.
  • Use one of the following bullet options for your own picture to be used:
o   "I have my own pic:"  and then enter the appropriate web location.
o   "I will upload my own picture:"  and then click the  "Browse..."  button to select from you computer's hard-drive.
  • Finish by scrolling to the bottom of the web page and click the  "Change profile"  button.

Well, that was strange. I followed the above steps several times, with more than one browser, and nothing appeared to happen. Then in desperation I went clicking through the 'users' list -- and the picture I'd been trying to upload was there as 'avatar 9946', so I was able to set it that way.

Curiouser and curiouser. Have you tried clearing your cache? It's definitely showing for me in the places where it's supposed to.

Edit: and then it went away and wasn't on the list, and I repeated the process and it's back. Very strange. (Also, it somehow shrunk from the 70x100 I uploaded to 56x80.)

Edit 2: and I reload the page and it's gone again.   :'(

In case it disappears again, this is the picture I'm trying to use.

I wonder if there's something funky with the permissions on my end. I may try again from a Linux system tomorrow and see if I can straighten it out that way.

i - as the admin - do not fully understand what causes the problem, so please be sure to log what solved it finally, because many users do actually change their avatars, but recent updates of the software or theme might cause some problem, on my side i just can confirm that dabase is not a problem ( or i would not be able to post here ) and webspace neither, because you would not have been able to attach the attachment if that would be the case, so i assume it is something on your side :(

I think I nailed it? Let's see if it stays nailed this time. The solution/workaround was to use the link option and put the link as the image location of the attachment above.

Today I have decided to change my avatar. Unfortunately something doesn't work and I cannot upload any picture. I vae tried many different sizes (800x800, 80x80, 64x64, 160x160) and different image formats (jpg, png, gif). Can anybody help me?

I have found that actually only way is to use option "I have my own pic:" and use external url.

Yes, something is keeping the direct upload feature from working.  The best workaround is to upload it to the gallery here, preferably to your personal gallery, then view the image and use it's URL - or any external host you prefer is also fine.

But is there away of added an image to your personal gallery with out it being posted as a Recent Picture?

As far as I know, all gallery uploads do appear there.

If that is to be avoided, an external image host, or maybe a file attachment here, would work.  Using attachments gets tricky as there are permissions associated with viewing them which means people not logged in may not b able to see the avatar.

Eventually we will need to upgrade to better and more modern forum software, and hopefully that will fix this, and many other issues with the site!
