Title: Prototyping with Algorithms
Post by: glennmarshall on July 09, 2013, 06:03:13 PM
Hi Folks,
Just thought I'd share the project I've been working on, based on Ray Marching and generative processes.  Any thoughts or comments welcome, cheers..

I have also been thinking about how new technologies will change the design process. If something like 3d printing becomes a cost effective production technique then the need for "a" design disappears and consumers will probably select the design of their products from "genetic offspring" of their Facebook friends' purchases.

I would also have a hard time going back to traditional modeling tools to design anything - what did we do before distance estimation??

to me it should be an evolutionary step in art - we already use computing power to speed up banal, mundane processes - why not artistic processes?
you could sit all day with a pen and paper trying to sketch an interesting outline for a product design, or you could speed up the process by thousands using a computer to create outlines for you.. this doesn't make it reductionist or non human - rather - it leaves the human mind's energy to be invested into the cerebral and philosophical side of the process.
