Title: Fractor3
Post by: ShenR on April 15, 2013, 04:03:46 PM
Hi.

I'd like to present to you my software project. It's a 2D fractal editor written in Java I've been working on for a very long time.
I think it's pretty capable and has some interesting and not very usual features, but that's for you to decide.

Apart from rendering traditional Mandelbrot/Julia sets and many classic 2D fractals the current features are:

Buddhabrot style rendering for any fractal.
Superformula editor for orbit traps.
Fractal based orbit traps.
Inverse IFS formula with visual affine transformation editor.
Fractal Poincare disks for hyperbolic tilings.
And probably many bugs i don't know about :embarrass:

Writing custom formulas is possible, however it's somewhat clumsy currently. I'm working on a compiler to make things better and to possibly support UF formulas.

A gallery of what it can do is here: http://theshenr.deviantart.com/gallery/

You can download it here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fractor3/
If you don't have Java installed and don't want to, use this link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fractor3/files/Fractor3_win_jre.zip/download

Controls are mainly focused on mouse, you can zoom in using left mouse button, zoom out using right. Middle mouse button opens a new window with Julia version. You can probably figure out the rest if you worked with any 2D fractal software before, if you don't, ask here or in the sourceforge discussion.

I'd be happy for any feedback:)

I like it, it is cool, you can do crazy coloring stuff with it.

It would be even cooler if it would be a tad more user friendly such as remembering application size for next launch and ability to set a default image size or ability to choose other sizes from a list, 320x240 is just too small and it quickly gets annoying having to retype values for each new image. Buttons to increase/decrease the various values in addition to text input boxes would be a bonus too. I also would like to be able to change zoom magnification power and be able to pan. Other than that, the standard/classic Newton formula is missing from the formulas on offer.

All in all, a great 2D fractal rendering program IMO, thanks for making it available.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions, most of them were on my list already, just trying to find some time to implement them.

As for the Newton formula, you can easily get it by using a Julia version of Nova fractal with zero C value. I guess i should add it, it didn't seem necessary to have a separate Newton formula, but i understand it may not be obvious.

By the way, you can make almost any formula with the "Custom" fractal, it's not as fast as the built-in ones, but it's pretty usable.

I've released a new version of Fractor3.

New features:
    - buttons to increase/decrease input values
    - choosing image size from list
    - panning by dragging with left mouse button
    - fine zooming with mouse wheel
    - progress bar to show how much of the fractal is done

Download link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fractor3/ (https://sourceforge.net/projects/fractor3/)
Version for Windows without Java: https://sourceforge.net/projects/fractor3/files/Fractor3_win_jre.zip/download (https://sourceforge.net/projects/fractor3/files/Fractor3_win_jre.zip/download)

As always, any feedback is appreciated:)
