Title: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: adamrw91 on February 23, 2013, 04:02:55 PM Hey, Im a long time lurker and user of Mandelbulb 3D and just recently got into 3D printing.
Im lookin for some nice parameters for some fractals that would be relatively easy to 3D print! It would be awesome if you guys could upload some parameters and then if i can get it to print ill upload a picture of your fractal for real! Hopefully we can collaborate on something awesome! Hello and welcome to the forums O0 I assume you mean the m3v files used to create voxel stacks, as uploading the hundreds of images in a stack or obj / stl files is surely prohibitive! I enabled the m3v file extension for attachments if anybody wants to upload files. What do you use to convert the stacks into a format for the 3D Printer? Is the printer yours, or are you using a service? If a service, which one? There's an extensive thread here on 3D Printing if you want to seek it out. Good Luck with the project. Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: adamrw91 on February 23, 2013, 04:34:27 PM Well I can take the m3v files or just the parameters i know how to make voxel stacks myself no problems.
to make the Voxels into a nice clean printable file is actually alot of work. I first take the image sequence of the voxel stack and upload it into Fiji then convert it to OBJ then send it to Zbrush for polygon count reduction then into 3Ds max to take parts away then into Meshlab for some repairs then into netfabb for the final repairs. After all that its ready to be printed on my 3d printer. I have a small 3D printing company run out of Gothenberg, Sweden we just started up. I just need some awesome fractals to print as I always get overly complex fractals in pieces in order for a fractal to be printable it has to be in one piece and not too many small threads, pipes, or small nonstructural sound objects. Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: Alef on February 25, 2013, 06:15:59 PM Knighty shared interesting thing I wanted to print. Probably it would require some tweeking, such as decreesing iteration count to get fractal with less holes.

Post by: adamrw91 on February 25, 2013, 06:26:37 PM yeah it may be possible to print something like this. Ill have to make it into a 3D model first and check it out a bit. It can be hard with support structures im not totally sure.

This is the JCube formula in Mandelbulb3D. Do you have your own printer? Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: adamrw91 on February 25, 2013, 07:35:10 PM ok cool :) Yeah i do. An Ultimaker its not a professional printer but its the closest you can get without going professional.
Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: adamrw91 on February 25, 2013, 07:38:39 PM And your shapeways store is the coolest one Ive seen so far! you must get pretty nice revenue from it!
Here is my first attempt at printing a fractal and ive been really pleased thats why i want help from the community to try and go better! http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:53083 Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: Alef on February 25, 2013, 07:42:52 PM IMHO, so far best prints are angular / exact mathematical shapes like sphere with hexagonal holes.
Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: adamrw91 on February 25, 2013, 08:00:18 PM haha why?
Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: Alef on February 25, 2013, 08:29:24 PM Don't know, probably becouse shape is lost. 3D printing of fractals is very new.
Title: Re: Looking for mandelbulb parameters to 3D print! Post by: adamrw91 on February 25, 2013, 08:36:30 PM I dont think its really the shape that is lost bet the details. It is really hard to print a fractal because all of the micro-detail that that a fractal is made of gets mostly lost as most printers don't have a better accuracy than .1mm on the X and Y axis. Possibly if i printed out a fractal that was 15cm by 15cm it would look like it had all the micro-detail but it would take a horribly long time to print. |
