Title: Inside views of the Mandelbox
Post by: JosLeys on February 08, 2013, 01:59:26 PM
Just over two years ago, Trafassel came up with the first inside views of the Mandelbox. He managed to show the parts that are 'inside' as empty air and the 'outside' parts as solid.
I've been wondering ever since how i could implement this, as the (analytic) distance estimate breaks down once the ray is in the 'inside' region. (it does not give negative values)

I see that it was implemented without problems in Mandelbulb 3D (chosing 'Outside render' in Amazing Box).

Can anyone give me any hints? Jesse, how did you manage it in M3D?

it is made using brute force, meaning that inside/outside is not based on distance estimates, but just true/false values ...

Yes, I think that is how Trafassel did it, but I wonder if there are other ways?

Probably you meant 'Inside render'. Chaos Pro can do the same, becouse it uses brute force raytracer without DE. Syntopia had mentioned that he implemented brute force raytracer, becouse it is only way to do inside renders.

since de estimators are based on the escaping times, measuring the widths of the "bands" this can not apply to inside regions :(
david making  was formulating a challenge about this, but no results yet...
