Financed by three-hundred forty-seven of the world's richest misguided philanthropists, a grant from the United Nations, and the sale of the state of Alaska to the People's Republic of China, The CNB was designed to be the first Communication Network to allow communication forward or backward in time, from the time which the system was activated onward. It would be the forerunner of a revolution in telecommunications and internet research. Technology would become accessible years before it was discovered, allowing for instantaneous advancement to the highest possible technological levels. Though referred to as the Central Network Building, the complex is larger in area, and indeed height, than New York City, Tokyo, and Des Moines combined. Each of the broadcast hubs was roughly the size of your average nuclear power plant, for the obvious reason that each broadcast hub was a nuclear power plant, each plant being responsible for maintaining a temporal wormhole roughly the size of an Plutonium nucleus, going back exactly one hour in time, through which electromagnetic pulses could be sent. Messages could be sent through these wormholes multiple times to be sent back as far as necessary. Messages to be sent forward could simply be held in memory to be broadcast at the appropriate future time. Rights to use the communication grid were sold to the highest bidder, which was, of course, Apple. The due date for the first installment of payment was set to be the year 2500. The projected benefits were, of course, very numerous. Commercials showed young college students Skyping with their older, richer, and highly successful selves; great-great-grandparents being sent baby pictures by their fourth generation descendants, and young men being guided through romance by their recently married selves. Sadly, two weeks before the system was meant to go online for the public, a message was sent back in time during testing that compromised international relations to the Chinese government, preventing the sale of Alaska, making it impossible to afford to build the grid in the first place. Many suspect that temporal communication has prevented itself from happening in this way multiple times throughout history, and that it is by the merest fluke of temporal relastatics that we have record of this at all. |
