Title: "Show new replies to your posts."?
Post by: kram1032 on November 27, 2012, 12:33:05 AM
What exactly does the link "Show new replies to your posts." do?
I really can't tell.
What I do know is, that it does not show what it states:
http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=unreadreplies
If I click on that, I get a long list of threads that I haven't even replied to, so there couldn't be replies to me.
And "new" certainly also is not applying. The very first few posts I get are back from February '11 and only five posts down, it already goes back to '10...

For me it seems to display new posts in threads were I did post (or reply to) anything (any time before). But I'm also not really sure, and was always surprised when something popped up after clicking this link :D

This is what shows up for me:
(The host might not work right now but it should be back soon <.<)

Note:
- I didn't post in a single one of those (else there would be a smiley on the text symbols)
- The times are outdated to say the least
- It's a whopping 18 pages. I'm not even sure wether I wrote in 28 pages worth of threads yet. (Could potentially be but it's unlikely)

I picked two and checked. in both you DID post.
eg http://www.fractalforums.com/mandelbulb-3d/it-was-inevitable/ (http://www.fractalforums.com/mandelbulb-3d/it-was-inevitable/)

try "mark all messages as read" and see what happens afterwards.

huh, ok. Why the heck does it not show the corresponding icon then?(http://puu.sh/1uPQX)
Like, the little smiley icon so you know you contributed to the thread.
And even so, what's up with those super old threads....

hey, lol kram, never sawn you that upset, as far as i know the function does exactly what it sais, and as taurus
checked it, you actually did post in some of the threads, so, when using this function the first time for years it
is really crappy and long, after you have read the real new postings, click mark all messages as read on that page
and use it in the future to see that it works ;)

Ok, I did that now.
So I guess, the "you contributed" logos aren't shown because it's obvious that you replied to them? - since it supposedly only shows threads you already posted to.
If that's the logics behind it, I'd still propose to change it so the smileys are shown. - I didn't bother checking because those smileys were missing and I couldn't at all remember the mentioned threads.

While marking posts as read, I found another issue: I'd expect "mark all as read" to be a global action. Instead, it marks as read seperately "unread posts" and "new replies". Though I actually kinda like that behavior, since it gives a bit more control.

However, it also works on each page seperately. So for the screenshot I showed before, which had 18 pages of "new" replies, I had to click "mark all as read" 18 times. That, to me, seems to be an unnecessary level of control.

cKleinhuis, I'm not so much upset as I am confused by how it works. I was pondering over this for a while now - months, if not a year - but finally decided it made me wonder enough to ask about it.
