Title: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: Tglad on October 20, 2012, 01:59:31 PM I made this fractal in fragmentarium (file attached), it is a foam, so lots of airtight pockets of air, but also if you don't count border points it is a cluster, i.e. lots of separate solids.
From the outside it looks like a similar '3d Koch' that others have made. It is also its own negative. Can you do cutting planes in fragmentarium? I'd like to see the cross section. Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: Kali on October 20, 2012, 04:00:29 PM Interesting.
I added a cut option. Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: DarkBeam on October 20, 2012, 06:07:27 PM It looks identical to mine. I don't remember well but my formula is quite different
Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: Tglad on October 21, 2012, 06:39:34 AM Yours is solid right?
Every face you add one middle cube to the front, like this: http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/SquareKochFractalSurface/. The difference is this one also removes the middle cube below. Only I realise it has a bug, which is hard to fix, so this is currently a void foam, no solid. I'll have to fix it another time. Off topic, but I realised yesterday that the triangle Koch surface: (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Koch_surface_0_through_3.png) is actually a simple example of a void shell. Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: Tglad on October 21, 2012, 10:41:24 AM Sorry Kali, thanks, I'll take a look.
I guess this fractal is just moving the centre cube of each face out, so no volume is removed each iteration, the final shape has the same volume as the start cube. You can also move the edges out, or the corners out, or combinations of all three... (a few glitches, would be better to do in scructuresynth I think) Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: DarkBeam on October 22, 2012, 11:14:43 AM Yours is solid right? No! It is empty inside, with amazing possible views. Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: DarkBeam on October 22, 2012, 11:18:06 AM img
Title: Re: Cluster-foam fractal Post by: Tglad on October 22, 2012, 01:10:33 PM heh heh. By the way I think the different 'moving cube' fractals are all cluster foams apart from when you shift out all three (the face middles, edges and corners) then you get a void solid, i.e. a space filling fractal that is really just a larger, lower density cube. Shame the 3d code has a bug, here's it on a 2d square, moving the corners out. |
