Title: First 3d Fractal animation in Touch Designer
Post by: tryptophan on September 17, 2012, 09:27:53 AM
Hi I've recently made my first animation of Kali`s KaliBroc (modified Buddhi formula) in a program called Touch Designer using Syntopia's DE-Raytracer. In a couple of weeks we'll have a TD component made that others may use. Touch Designer is a realtime graphics, audio, and data graphical programming environment that makes use of many types of programing, GLSL, Cuda, Python, C++ was well as graphical programing interface to create components to process 2d and 3d graphics. It also has extensive animation, audio, midi, DMX, and OSC capabilities. There is free version of Touch available for non-commercial use if anyone is interested in checking it out.

I've always liked fractals (2d and 3d) but I had a hard time waiting for animations to render and I really like the new 3d fractal programs but find them extremely difficult to animate so I've begun porting and creating various 2d and 3d formulas and render engines into Touch for myself and others to use. In a couple of weeks we'll have a small version of the fractal component available for download on the Touch Designer forum. Below is my first animation in Touch (it took about an hour to keyframe and about 2 min to render at 5120x2880) this animation runs at 30 fps at 1280 by 720.

Hmmm, I'm just watching a Rush concert DVD and I noticed a credit for Derivative in the packaging.  Keep working on your fractal plugin, who knows, you might end up on tour with Rush!

Thanks guys for the comments.

I realized in the above post that I didn't thank all the people involved. Huge thanks to Mikael (Syntopia) and for his generosity and help in porting the shaders into Touch. Huge thanks to Malcolm (Derivative) for all the help and tips with GLSL and Touch Designer. Huge thanks to Kali, Buddhi, Knighty and all the other incredible mathematicians/programmers out there that are writing these amazing formulas and programs.

cheers
Keith
