Title: Availability of Older programs?
Post by: Cyclops on January 16, 2009, 12:34:28 PM
Just wondering. I used to have an Atari ST and had a few neat fractal programs for it and was wondering how I'd find out if one could newer versions of these to run on windows,or perhaps an emulator? Some of the programs I remember were Fractint Fracgen and an unusual one called Kraska(russian word for colour)
Anyone else used these and know there are current versions of them out there?

Fractint : http://www.fractint.org/

Don't know if that's the same as the old Fractint from the Atari though, but it is considered the parent of all modern fractal software :)

I don't know about the others you mentioned.

I don't know as I'm not up to date with Fractint, I have an old version that does run in XP under DOS but it's full-screen and wouldn't run under Vista - note that the new realease at the top does say "WinFract" so I'm guessing it may work - I'm sure someone here will know :)

I've been searching and searching for this Kraska program I used to have on the Atari ST but no joy. I found a site offering a download but its awfully big and all in polish so I don't know if its the same thing.

I would argue that "FracTools" was the "parent". Fractint *might* take the freeware prize, but even then, it came out long after FracTools did.
If anything, FracTools drove the opensource/freeware realm to author such programs.  I wish it were still around somewhere.

the freeware prize, but even then, it came out long after FracTools did.

FractInt (http://www.nahee.com/spanky/www/fractint/fractint.html) originally appeared in 1988 as FRACT386, a computer program for rendering fractals very quickly on the Intel 80386 processor using integer arithmetic.  In February 1989, the program was renamed FractInt (http://www.nahee.com/spanky/www/fractint/fractint.html).  In July 1990, it was ported to the Atari ST with the math routines rewritten in M68K assembler by Howard Chu.

As for as FracTools, I can only assume you meant the product which was made available from:
   Bourbaki. Inc.
   P.O. Box 2867
   475 Main Street
   Boise, Idaho, 83701
   U.S.A
   1-800-289-1347
   1-208-342-5849
I seriously doubt it is anywhere around these days.

Well I have tried in vain to get Fractint, but everytime I visit the official site I get a Page not found or such error. Has their site gone down?

If you had clicked either of the large blue FractInt (http://www.nahee.com/spanky/www/fractint/fractint.html) words in my previous posting, then you would have gotten to the Spanky Database pages where all the information is located.

I am now running the revised Spanky Database (http://www.nahee.com/spanky/www/fractint/fractint.html) web pages from my site.  The old site at http://spanky.triumf.ca/ (http://spanky.triumf.ca/) has been failing for over a year now (one never knows when it is up or not, or whether it will be around much longer).

Thanks Nahee, I bookmarked the page!
