Title: Plasma Bulb
Post by: Kali on August 30, 2012, 09:27:36 AM
One of the Fragmentarium scripts I'm currently working on and testing.
The fractal shown is a Mandelbulb Julia, using a rendering technique I called PGR (Plasma Grid Rendering).
I made this short anim for testing a simple flight path through the object, and I liked the result so I decided to post it, but no HD sorry.

Thanks Johan and Weavers, I really appreciate your comments.

I'm getting better results right now using this technique, with some improvements I made.
I'll be uploading some HD videos soon. The main problem is to program a nice flight path, is not that easy as with mandelbulb3d, I have to research on how to do it in a nice way, using splines or something like that. I did some screen captures when navigating with mouse and keyboard but obviously is not a very good solution. Btw, any help on this will be appreciated.

My plan with Fragmentarium is still to support keyframe animations using the Animation tool - this would be the best way. However, at the moment I'm short on time :-) As for interpolation, the tricky stuff is the camera: the Eye->Target vector must be kept orthogonal to the Up vector (which must be normalized). Simple interpolation will yield very bad results here (consider a 180 degrees turn). I think the best option is something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slerp, but this requires a lot of tedious conversions.

Anyone knows how Mandelbulber / M3D do camera interpolation?

mandelbulber interpolates catmull-rom spline, m3d quadratic bezier.
personally, i prefer the mandelbulber variant, because it meets exactly every keyframe. disadvantage is overshooting sometimes.

btw. cool stuff kali!

Thanks for the comments...

That would be great, I'll wait patiently for that feature.
In my animation I just translated and rotated the object, the camera is fixed.

I use slerp and yes it means quaterion to matrix conversions but that is only 3 functions :) mat2quat,slerp,quat2mat

The plasma bulb is cool. It is first render from 3D buddabrot what mean buddabulb - brot
