Title: New kind of Julia fractal morph
Post by: rrwick on June 12, 2012, 02:27:56 PM
Hi, everyone!  I just joined the forums so I could share the animations I've made using a program that I wrote.  They all feature traditional Julia fractals made with the formula f(z) = z^n + c.

My animations have these features:
  • colouring using the distance estimation method to give them a simple, clean appearance
  • the Julia set's parameter (a.k.a. its seed value) changing over time to make the fractal morph
  • temporal anti-aliasing (a.k.a motion blur) to make the animations smooth and fluid

Here is a link to my YouTube playlist for my simple animations where the parameter changes over time:

However, I then got a novel idea that I haven't seen tried before: what if the fractal's parameter value varied not only with time, but also with location?  That is to say, what if I wrote some functions so that the fractal parameter was different in one part of the image compared with another?  I gave this a try, and some of the results are pretty cool - sometimes very distorted fractals but with rapidly-changing detail.

Here's a YouTube playlist for my animations that use this idea:

By the way, all of my YouTube videos were uploaded at 720p, so don't forget to increase the size and quality.  Any feedback or questions are appreciated!
