Title: 2011 BMFAC News Update Post by: haltenny on May 03, 2012, 01:27:23 AM Hi all. I just posted an update on DeviantART on the BMFAC. Also of note is that Javier Barrallo wrote an article on the contest for a Spanish science magazine. All of the winning submissions to the 2011 BMFAC were included in the article and all are inside the print magazine. I posted pics of the article and a few that Javier sent from the first exhibit in Logroņo, in Northern Spain. My piece, "Gordian Twist" was chosen by the editor of the magazine for the cover art. Here's a link to the journal entry. http://haltenny.deviantart.com/journal/2011-BMFAC-News-Update-299664037 (http://haltenny.deviantart.com/journal/2011-BMFAC-News-Update-299664037) I could also upload pics here if you want, I just didn't know the best place to put them :)

Also thank you for the info... sad that BMFAC still never put any info / images from the exhibit at their site... :/ Title: Re: 2011 BMFAC News Update Post by: taurus on May 03, 2012, 10:15:21 AM ... sad that BMFAC still never put any info / images from the exhibit at their site... :/ sad but true, even a dedicated query from me for a press handout or any other info about the exhibit was replied with silence. the local press here was quite interested in a homie, being amongst the winners of an international art contest, but i could not even tell them where in logroņo this exhibit takes place. embarrassing! :-\ thanks hal for the update, glad to see that this contest wasn't a hallucination. i agree with johan, your image comes out great as cover art! Yes, I agree that the BMFAC site has not done a very good job following up on the progress. Javier did say he was waiting for some other pictures and newspapers reviews that he will share as soon as received from local organizers. He also said he has saved 25 brochures from the exhibit, one for each winner. I am assuming at some point he will send them to us... Thanks very much for the kind words! They should know it means a lot to us... Title: Re: 2011 BMFAC News Update Post by: KRAFTWERK on May 04, 2012, 09:33:51 AM This is going to be a massive posting... sorry C... O0 I got the PDF of the article in the "redes" magazine from Hal, and managed to extract the text and Googletranslate it (with all the strangeness that will cause) Nothing very interesting or new in it, but I thought at least some of us might be interested: 22 e l u c v or i ng on t i l a e r r a Vi ctor Carbajo (Tissue). The term was coined by the mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot in 1975, derived from the Latin fractus, which means broken. This type objects belong to many of the forms present in the nature, like trees, mountains, galaxies, reefs or clouds. The main characteristic of a fractal object is its roughness and irregularity, which will prevents be described using traditional geometry use to define our houses, furniture and cities. Is Speaking of this geometry fractal to refer to objects rugose, as present in nature which can not be employing the geometry defined Euclidean designed in the former Greece over 2,000 years ago. To mark the ARTEFRACTAL The fourth edition Contest international Benoît fractal art Mandelbrot, we a look at the fascinating world of fractals, where mathematics and art meet and generate structures of great beauty Stuart Painter (Renaissance). Hal Tenny (Gordi an Twi st). m a t e m i c a t to s 24 A second feature of is the self-similarity of fractals, ie, ownership by the that some objects show copies of themselves to different scales. For example, the structure of the coastline Spain is very similar to be observed on a scale of 1000 kilometers at a scale 100, 10 or 1 kilometer. And even if we decrease the range of observation up to a meter, the contour of the rocks forming maintains a coast resemblance to the contours of larger scale. This property is repeated in other objects, such as clouds or tree branches, where each fragment is similar the overall whole. All they are fractal objects. are generated by electron complete a computer and no questions his humanity, but in that time no other artistic expression depended on both of science and technology as design fractal images. But art is not a fractal computational process in the meaning that the computer works independently, assisted by an operator pressing buttons and moving levers. The computer is always directed towards the direction that points the artist. A fractal image is not a random building, but satisfies many rules, formulas and algorithms. Like any process mathematical nature, art requires training fractal and training. Through practice, the results pass obtained from random and unpredictable to be creative and balanced. A good artist must always maintain fractal control of their work in terms Structure, composition and color. After defining the work may continue to adjust parameters and intuitively color palettes until the optimal result. Like other forms digital art, fractal art generated virtual models impossible to produce in life real, where laws prevail physical. The results from our creativity and computer provides only the muscle to them visible without any awareness of what occurs. Computers for are very potent, are not able to select patterns FRACTAL CREATIVITY Although in its beginning fractal geometry had a purely theoretical, soon the beauty of its images and the impact caused from reminded the general public a group of artists that was possible to create a fractal art as a genre of visual art emerging in the 80 and 90. Fractal images are generated solely by the computer as they need an enormous amount of calculations mathematical impossible develop manually. By This is why fractal art was associated in its origins to art computer and received with great skepticism by the community artistic. Many criticisms was based on the computer who generated fractal image through numerical processes iterative and therefore presumably dehumanized the process creative. CONTEST FRACTAL ART It Beno MANDELBROT In 2005, the discoverer of fractals, Benoit Mandelbrot, gave his name to the contest International fractal art. Since then this event has served as indisputable thermometer and benchmark the evolution of fractal art. In life, Benoît Mandelbrot chaired three editions of competition (2005, 2007 and 2009) and their subsequent exhibitions. During his address established profile of the contest, worked with the jury, wrote prefaces to catalogs and whenever you was opened in person may exposures containing the selected images. On October 14, 2010 Mandelbrot died. During four decades led the aware of numerous mathematical and inspired scientists from other disciplines. The fourth edition of this competition is dedicated to his memory. Its enthusiasm for the project is irreplaceable and will be very difficult fill the void it leaves us, but Aliette Mandelbrot and his widow fractal expert Michael Barnsley have taken over as honorary chairmen. Although fractal art is only a small part of the work developed by Benoît Mandelbrot in his lifetime, this competition serves as a tribute the entire fractal geometry. As in the three previous editions, the jury chosen international 25 images to be displayed at about 2012 world (as in last year were in Spain, Argentina and India). Of note is the marked international character of contest, with a share fractal artists from more than 30 countries. Can More information on the competition website (Www.fractalartcontests.com). Programs Fractals have evolved Incredibly and reached a level of sophistication seemed impossible as recently as a decade. And that only we are facing at the beginning of this form of expression combines art and math. When we contemplate the fractal images first dazzled us for years 80, now seem antiquated. The fractal art moves large speed and, like other artistic trends, presents a huge variety of techniques and styles. To this promotes easy access to digital art, since in our days are not necessary stations working with powerful graphical environments but computers are low cost personal capable of effectively the necessary calculations. The Forums provide places to meet and exchange and Internet provides resources teaching and tutorials to plunge into the world creating a fractal. In this evolution include fractals undoubtedly dimensional, namely the Mandelbulbs and Mandelboxes -So named in honor of Mandelbrot, which are like the famous group dimensional Mandelbrot transferred to the three dimensions.
