Title: Annual Fractal Art Competition 2012 Announcement
Post by: cKleinhuis on May 01, 2012, 02:29:51 PM
Annual Fractalforums.com Fractal Art Competition 2012

5th Anniversary - "the possibilities are infinite!"

This year the fractalforums.com annual fractal art competition goes into its fifth round.
This year a motto should guide each contestant, the motto is the slogan of the forums:

"the possibilities are infinite"

Prizes are sponsored by user GFWorld, as prizes each winner in the sections will get its
winning image ( still image for movies ) printed on a cup of coffe, and additionally i
include Fractalforums.com Calendar 2012 in the sending.

General Guidelines:

- Every contestant may enter up to 3 entries in each section
- Submission Period last from 1st of May until 1st of June
- Voting Period last from 1st of June until 1st of July
- Each entry may be used for Fractalforums.com Calendar 2013
- be unique with your entries, already seen images may not be accepted at all!
- upload your images to the gallery
- only votes in the gallery count

Additional Information

This year i want to produce a calendar for 2013 a second time, calendar layouting
will start after the compo is over, but: the calendar will only go in print, if at
least 50 Pre-Orders are paid, with that money the calendar can go into print ...
but more on that later

Hi Christian,

can you clarify the rules on the 5 minute film?

Does it have to be five minutes of one single segment - or can it be made up of, say, 5 x 1 minute segments? (if this can still tell a story)

I'm guessing the soundtrack has to be original or creative commons -i.e., not copyrighted material.

minimum length 5 minutes, the style is your own decision, if you want to show 10 still images, in 5 minutes, with music, it is your decision ;)
try to connect them, try to blend them, try to zoom each others, let your creativity flow :D

Hello,

I tried to submit an image to the competition, but it is unclear which page I need to submit to. I found a gallery with two images thus far submitted (and I made a comment about the first image submitted), but I am not sure which gallery my image was submitted to, and I cannot find it. It is called Tsunami Curve.

Please show me the link where I can officially submit my art. and please let me know where on the page to upload.

Thank you!

@ventrella, sorry that i have to ask.... but.... did you actually read the above announcement ?!?!??! and additionally, did you read in which section you uploaded your image ?!?!? i think not, you uploaded your images to the promo banners section, this will be used to further announce the compo as banners above the page ... so, please just use links provided above to choose right categories, i have moved your images to the "wildstyle" section ...

just in case flash animations go in film or in animation ?

Edit

humm..i was no clear, for flash animation i simply mean animation saved in flash format
i have no so clear the distinction you do between movie and animation

it is (short)"movie" opposite to little animated gif ?

if it is longer than five minutes it would go into film ... if it is shorter in animation ...
i am unsure if i should restrict usage of swf, or allow it ... but in my eyes it is clearly
allowed ...

Maybe it's just that I don't post here enough to really know how the image submission system works, but I don't know what you mean by submitting from the gallery. If I go to the gallery and use any of the add picture links it requires me to choose a category and the Annual Competition and its subcategories aren't listed unless we're supposed to submit it to "Annual Art Compo 2012 Promo." Am I trying to submit it from the wrong place or are we supposed to make a new topic on the child board (http://www.fractalforums.com/wildstyle/) and attach it there?

I noticed the same thing.

Tried to upload a test pic, but no wildstyle category option.
Tried 'competitions' but it ended up only in 'Recent Pictures (list all)

that is strange, when clicking the "add image" button the current categbory should be preselected.... and it worked for me, i know i hve the admin rights,
but i couldnt find any user account level related settings in the gallery, will have to track it down!

okay, used the testuser account to check it, i locked the parent category, which prevented sub categories as well to be used as targets, now the category is correctly preselected when clicking add-image .... lets get startet!

Thanks for that, I thought I had completely forgotten how to use a forum for a second. Submitted my three entries into Wildstyle for this year, I'm looking forward to losing to Kraftwerk again like I expect.

Flash animation .flv like youtube or watever would hardly be web content.

short animation is generally meant to be a real short animation e.g. below 1 minute of play,
the "film" section is meant for longer productions ( 5minutes minimum ) and for better music background and story....
this compo set up is a test this year, and i did it for sockratease, but i see it is more confusing ( counting the entries allready submited )
and a little disappointing how few entries yet are achieved, perhaps it will grow until end of compo, but certainly next
years will be 2 still sections, and 1 movie section....

but perhaps we can get some nice gif animations to be used as smileys out of it ?°! :D

As I posted, I have 5 MB gif file looping. Could I use deviantart as uploader service? I will tri the shrunk the gif, but at 100x100 wouldn't be much left of it.

...a little disappointing how few entries yet are achieved,

I'm sorry that you find yourself disappointed, Christian - but maybe this reminder will help:
firstly, you have stipulated to "tell a story" - for at least five minutes - AND the story should convey that "The Possibilities are Infinite."
These things will take time to dream up and develop - and you know well that even a short anim can take months to render, so I suspect that
you're right that "perhaps it will grow until end of compo," Relax!

Kam

thanks kam - i could not say better. here a little calculation:
assuming you render 5 minutes of fractal animation @ 25 fps, you need 7500 frames. i am on an animation that takes about 3 minutes per frame with 720p (some more, some less). then rendering takes 3*7 500= 22 500min = 375 h = 15,625 days of rendering (24/7). so it's hard enough to to get it done anyway - we'll see how many will cross the finish line in time  ;D

in my eyes 5meg gifs dont make any sense ( no scrubbing, no load indicator, no music ) and i would suggest to submit your animation via standard youtube?

humm 5MB is far too much for a gif but not sufficient for a video of more then few seconds

Maybe the best here is use  swf (flash ) will be quite less heavy (at least if you don't needed to repeat) and will allow a soundtrack
and higher image quality

If you use gimp i may indicate a script for automatic conversion (but do on the original not on the gif)

I was thinking of if there would be a "innovation" or "innovation of the year" categrory. It would not have much partipicants, but that would be pretty interesting one, recognising fractal innovation of the  year.

This sounds like something that would work better as something handed out based on the full year's worth of activity here, rather than specific entries. Usually something will stand out, like the Mandelbulb or the Mandelbox in their respective years.

What is the maximum limit of size (kB) of a gif?
Can I replace my small smile?

you can replace entries until end of submission period
no real size limit for gifs, but choose the smalles possible, especially those that could be used as smileys ;)

@vega, hint on your anim: transparent background, but ok hard for an gif, choose an anim where the smiley is once centered ;) and additionally with nice spirals visible, just some thoughts, like the anim and the smile!

I was trying to add an animation for the 2012 competition, but I think I used the wrong Category.  Now I see it in the Banner.  I don't see how to update the category.  It is called "Magic Box" - could you put it in the right place.  This is the link that I was trying to add in the description.  http://youtu.be/ZdMyNs-Rbrk

I was trying to add add a Wildstyle picture and Animation for the 2012 competition, but I didn't find the correct categories. I published both in the category "Fractal Art". Could you help me put them in the right place, please? I know it's late and I hope to be within the limits of the competition. In Mexico City is 20:56 pm of June 1. I have tried all afternoon to publish them in the correct category and I couldn't. :'( Thank you very much! :dink:

Quote
Submission Period last from 1st of May until 1st of June

so i think it would be fair to do so...
