Title: Wikipedia article on the Mandelbrot set, and my 3D variants
Post by: Duncan C on July 16, 2008, 10:43:09 PM
There is a good, and growing, article on the Mandelbrot set on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set). It also covers Julia sets, plus Mandelbrot/Julia sets from higher order equations, etc.

Part of that article is a gallery of zoom images showing "classic" features of the Mandelbrot set. (scroll down to the section titled "Image gallery of a zoom sequence" to see the images in the Wikipedia article.)

A while back, as an exercise, I decided to try to duplicate some of those images using my application, FractalWorks.

I then decided to go back and create 3D versions of these images. Go to my FractalWorks Wikipedia Mandelbrot images gallery (http://www.pbase.com/duncanc/wiki_mandel_images) to see my attempts to duplicate the images from the Wiki article. Each 2D image is followed by a 3D variant.

I think the 3D versions do a good job of illustrating the shape and structure of the Mandelbrot set.

Here is a sample of my 3D images:
