Title: My Amazing Fractal! Post by: Weber on March 14, 2012, 09:38:38 AM It all started with an AmazingBox and after a few tweaked settings...I got this. Before I go into any more details, I just wanted to let you know that I am a total noob when it comes to 3D fractals, and in fact i only just started doing them a week ago. Now you may be wondering why i made this post so I'll happily answer that for you.
Reason 1: This fractal amazes me! I've never seen one as complex as this on youtube, vimeo or anywhere else. And it is without a doubt the most architectural looking fractal that I've ever seen as well. It has some very ornate and intricate details.(just watch the slideshow) Reason 2: This thing is monstrous! I literally get lost when I'm deep inside of it. The box has been sliced up into many rows and columns and each of these rows and columns are different from the other. I've never seen such diversity in a fractal before and I've watched a ton of YouTube videos of them. Reason 3: Extremely diverse! There are at least 10 different terrain types(If i can use that word). So in each of these 10 sections, there is a whole new world completely different from the others and very much explorable as well. There are nooks and crannies inside of nooks and crannies. In the video that I'm working on I went 7 layers deep at the end and only stopped because the video time was getting pretty full. So I leave you with this slideshow preview recorded in 1080p for your viewing pleasure. It's short but sweet and certainly enough for you to hopefully get the scope of the size of this monster. Post by: cKleinhuis on March 14, 2012, 11:23:51 AM the amazing box is surely the most interesting object that popped up recently, have you read the thread discussing about what well known fractal shapes can be found inside ? it seems that the amazing box formula includes all different ways of creating fractals, so you find menger like, julia like, mandelbrot like structures in the box, most interesting is using negativ scale parameters, i think it was -1.7 that yielded very interesting results!

Post by: taurus on March 14, 2012, 10:53:10 PM christian is right, the amazing box (or mandelbox) is one of the most manifold fractals described so far. i assume it is the base of at least 80% of the hybrids shown here in the gallery. the negative scaled mandelbox (best between -1.8 and -1.1) makes most interresting results when adding rotation angles to the folding planes. just add the "_Rotate" modifier in the second slot and here you go.
for serious mandelbox explorations i strongly recommend mandelbulber. except a little drawback in calculation speed, it has many advantages for that particular fractal type (but not for its hybrids). mandelbulber is slightly different to m3d, but offers some more possibilities, tweaking the mandelbox (named tglad's formula in mandelbulber). especially deep zooms are much easier to make than in m3d (if possible at all) just check out http://mandelbulber.com/ (http://mandelbulber.com/) or the mandelbulber section here at ff http://www.fractalforums.com/mandelbulber/ (http://www.fractalforums.com/mandelbulber/) for more infos, tutorials and a huge gallery. have fun! And yes the Mandelbox is my favorite fractal mainly because I love deep exploration and there are endless places to explore inside of one. @cKleinhuis Could you kindly guide me to that particular thread because I haven't seen it and would like to go through it. @taurus66 I recently tried Mandelbulber, but I really didn't want to get into another program since I just started with M3D. But I will definitely have to fire it up again and explore some Mandelboxes. Edit: @cKleinhuis Ok if you are referring to the thread called Amazing Fractal then yes I've read through that one. That is why I made this thread and named it similarly. The main difference between mine and the regular Amazing Box is simply the openness and scale. Most amazing Boxes are way too congested for me. Sure in the 3d world its the same size as any other box, but because the crevasses are larger in mine, the whole object appears bigger. Furthermore I used a combination of formulas that skewed the box and made it less symmetrical allowing for even more diversity and openness. Anyway I'm leaving the params here in case anyone wants to explore this box. I think it's unique and well technically it is, but I can see how others who have been around a while and have seen many boxes would not think it so different. Tip: Start at the top and work your way down.
