Title: Fractal TAG
Post by: MattSchultz on May 14, 2008, 10:44:31 AM
Once, way back in the day, there was another fractal forum (I forget what it was called - anyone remember this thing?) That forum has long since deceased (it had a very short lifetime). On this forum we had a great game - fractal tag. Here's how it worked. We started with a parameter set (yeh, this was a UF game - it made things easy), and from there everyone was free to add a layer and re-post the parameter set. There are four rules:

  • You cannot, EVER edit another layer. You may add a layer only. You may not add a layer which completely masks previous layers, every layer must blend with previous layers, changing the image in new, and interesting ways.
  • You may only ever add one layer. Not two. Not one and a half. The exception is masks. Your layer can have as many masks as you want, as those are strictly subtractive.
  • You cannot post twice in a row. Once you post an edit, you are 'it' and cannot post again until someone posts another layer
  • No animation. This is because we don't all use UF4, and animation just generally makes everything harder. Tag games could be run without this rule, however.

Some games can add extra rules and restrictions, such as formula limitations, themes, colors, etc. This adds to the fun of the game, forcing artists to think artistically. This game, however, has no restrictions.

Images continue to evolve naturally until, at one point, they become difficult to evolve further, and the artists in the thread simply declare it closed to further posts, after which it is complete, and available for everyone to enjoy.

Alright, enough bs...let's get the ball rolling! I'm going to start with a simple one - a spiral (sortof). Once again - how the image depends all depends on the players. Hopefully this idea will become as popular as it once was, we had some great fun, and made some great images.

Here we go:

FractalTag1 {
fractal:
  title="Fractal Tag Image 1" width=640 height=480 layers=1
  credits="Matthew Schultz;5/14/2008"
layer:
  caption="Background" opacity=100
mapping:
  center=0/0 magn=1
formula:
  maxiter=100 percheck=off filename="tma.ufm" entry="mandaladeltajulia"
  p_bailout=7.0 p_seed=0.9375/0.34375 p_power1=3.0/0.0 p_power2=1.0/0.0
  p_power3=1.0/0.0 p_budge=0.0/0.0 p_kludge=0.0/0.0 p_nudge=0.0/0.0
  f_fn1=flip f_fn2=conj f_fn3=log f_fn4=ident
inside:
  transfer=none
outside:
  transfer=linear
gradient:
  smooth=yes index=3 color=4534046 index=121 color=12701914 index=180
  color=4146275 index=336 color=15788490
opacity:
  smooth=no index=0 opacity=255
}

Tag, you're it!

Hey there, this is a GREAT game, you can post uf formula files as attachments
how do i load this formula into uf ?

i pasted the text into a .ufr file but uf4 refuses to load it ... :(

i think this is such a great game, it should get an own topic, later on this day i will create a board section for that, i do not know exactly where to put it, it is like "Collaborative Fun" :D  :police: :police: :police: :police:

i pasted the text into a .ufr file but uf4 refuses to load it ... :(

What you should be able to do is just copy the text itself, then, in UF4, create a new image (it doesn't matter of what - just pick whatever comes up on your screen, as it will all be momentarily erased) hit CTRL+V, and the fractal -should- appear.

The advantage to posting text is twofold - one, there is nothing to download, copy and paste is stupid fast. Two, UFR files (this is why UF4 did not load the file) contain the actual raster image itself along with the definition, meaning that they are rather larger than needed, meaning people with dial-up are not happy. Granted, since I was last active in fractals, dial-up is not really as prevalent (read - if you're reading this on dialup which is NOT your phone on EDGE (come on...3g...) you need to upgrade, like now...), but hey man why send data for nothing?

To post images, you will note that directly above edit > paste is edit > copy, and it does what you would expect it to do ;)

Try that and see if it works, if not, we can post params as ufr's.

No Fair!

I don't have UltraFractal!!

I have Chaos Pro, which can work with UF Formulas, but is free, so Everyone can play if we convert it to that program (it handles layers and is similar to UF in many ways - or so I have been told) (but I never played much with it's layering feature).

I could convert the above UF Formula with Chaos Pro's importer, but would not be able to spit back out an Ultra Fractal formula for others.

I've been thinking of fractal games for the forum, but so far all I came up with was "Variations On A Theme" where each week a new person would pick a very general idea for image content (ranging from formula variations to having the finished image look like a duck or something).

Then people just post from whatever program they have!

It's more open ended that way and does not limit us to one program.

But this is a GREAT start for those of us who have Ultra Fractal!  I'll go check if there is a free trial period, and if it has limited functionality during that period.  I may be able to participate if I can get the program!  (I am not allowed to buy anymore software for a while yet...  just blew my budget on a 3D Program, and my Princess has medical bills!).

you dont have to buy uf, just download it and use the trial version all the time !

and it worked now for me, uf had to download the formula !

lets see what i can do ...

GREAT!

I thought the trial would have limitations preventing proper use  (most commercial software does!).

If not...  I can play!

Weee!

According to the 'license' if you want to use it more than 30 days, you are supposed to buy it, but it will not ever stop actually working. And it does not allow you to export images without watermarking, though there's a way around that as well (I won't actually say what it is, but I will say that it is a two key combination - the first key is CTRL+F, and the second is a single key found up in the top right portion of your keyboard :angel1: ). The other way around that is of course a good friend with a copy ;D. I will admit that my first few years of making fractals were done this way, as I did not have a credit card (read my profile - you will notice why), and I couldn't actually buy it. Of course, I now own UF, and lots of other things (and curiously, I no longer have any money...wonder how that happened) but my old method will work for this purpose.

Cool! I like the new layer, interesting direction!

I'm really excited to see people are into this thing, as this is a crazy fun game! I can't wait to see what cool stuff we come up with!

And now I'm off to bed, as I'm tired, it's 3AM, and my mouse ran out of batteries :fiery:. I'm not going to post again for a few rounds to let others join in, but hopefully there will be some cool stuff here in the morning!

// Matt

ps - I've decided to try to use every single smilie on this board :P - the fro one will be last

Well...  since the first two entries appear to be nothing but formula files, this may not be an issue  (I kind of thought we'd be posting Images!).

I should be able to post just formulas - for 30 days anyhow...  I would abide by the agreement if I downloaded the software.  I do some commercial work, and can't be seen as flaunting such things!!

the image can be posted after we decide the game is over, but inbetween snapshots can also be posted, no problem, but since few users have uf registered, we have to wait until one posts an image  O0 O0 O0

WOW. This is awesome! I can tell this is going to be as much fun here as I remember it was!

A couple of new notes:
  • Feel free to name your layers. I left the background name unchanged, because, well, it is the background. But you are all welcome to name your layers as you like. This is an exception to the rule of not editing old layers.
  • I also changed the image naming scheme. When we are done, I will compose a complete parameter set file with each revision, and a complete set of renders. Perhaps by then I will have gotten paid and I will be able to make a movie of it after buying UF4.

Having some fun now! The greatest part of this game comes when you make a change to the image with one thing in mind, then somebody comes and puts in a layer with an HSL Addition blending and does something totally, bind-blowingly awesome and completely different from what you expected :evil1:. This game is so much fun!

ok, great one, i think this game should end soon, i suggest a game should be closed if the first layer is no more really visible

and what do you think about the colors ?!?!?

right now we have a green and pink image, i am not an expert at color schemes, but somehow this looks weird, perhaps someone could
make the least modifikation adjusting the colors, what do you think ?

i see that there are many palettes inside right now, perhaps we should leave it as it is ...  :police:

 i have played around with the visibility of the layers, just to show a variation

I know a bit about colorschemes...green and pink are not weird. But is always a personal thing :-)

I only just got Ultra Fractal yesterday and have not had much time to learn it.

(I had a huge render going on - it just finished!  I hope to post the animation before leaving for employment soon...)

But I just wanted to add that they wouldn't call it a Color SCHEME if there wasn't something Sneaky going on!

Green and pink is fair, look at a watermelon... :clown:

As for the game ending - in Ultrafractal, direct visibility of layers does not necessarily indicate non-importance. I have lots of fractals where there are 10+ layers and while the base layer is not necessarily obvious in the resulting image, its removal greatly effects the overall image, and that is still true even of this image.

That said, I believe this image is beginning to stabilize. While I'm not ready to put forward a vote to close it, I doubt it will go more that a few more layers. I may post another layer later today when I have some more time.

yes, it was just a suggestion, to let it end at a certain time, and not running endlessly :D

but really cool game and collaborative art, splendid game !

Well, after a few days and a couple tries, I'm going to have to eat my words here, and second a nomination to end this particular one - I can't come up with a good layer that makes it any better.

On that note, however, I did find an interesting point in the fractal that's worth sharing...this does not follow the rules anymore, as it edits the location of every layer, and so it is not part of the game, but I thought it looked neat enough to share:

ok, i declare this game as closed

if someone can render the images, it would be great to
have each step as a single image, i have made a gallery section for that, images up to 1280x1280 and 1 mb can be uploaded there,

i just uploaded all the steps to this gallery:

http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=gallery;cat=26
