the 3d texture provides a good depth cue, nice & colourful too :)

Wow - that's really good.  How long did it take to render?

I don't pay much attention to render times - I'm just interested in the final results :-)

I think it took around 12 hours rendered at 3072*3072 - bear in mind that it is 3 layers.

I'm just in the process of adding an optimisation to the formula that will hopefully speed things up considerably.

12 hours is pretty good.  The image used on the cover of biocursion took about the same amount of time, but was rendered with Lightwave - not a fractal app.  The only reason it even took that long was the renderosity and reflections.  The animation frames took, on average, a little more than an hour.
