Title: FractInt under Windows (Beta-5)
Post by: Nahee_Enterprises on February 21, 2007, 08:25:45 PM
For those that have ever used FractInt (http://www.Nahee.com/spanky/www/fractint/fractint.html), they know it is one of the oldest FREE software programs still being maintained.  And that the various Developers have been making modifications on an irregular basis over the past several years, where they are available at:   http://www.FractInt.org/ (http://www.FractInt.org/)

Recently, there has been an effort to make it more compatible with the current Windows operating system environment.  And since the beginning of this year, a few Beta versions have been tested out privately.  As of this week, Beta-5 was released for public testing:

Sorry for bring back an old topic.
I just found this beta version today, and was quite surprised. It's much faster than WinFract, the Evolution is there, there are bigger and better resolutions available (sometimes), but it still has some hiccups, I'm guessing that some might be related to a specific formula because it always hangs in a specific procedure (cmplxmarksjul always crashes in evolution mode here). Are there like with Apophysis some other alternative group of programmers that develop alternative versions of FractInt even under a different software name? It seems that new versions (stable and/or development) of FractInt appear only every 2 years or so...

Yes, there are some problems with the handling of specific formulas.  This is even evident between the DOS and the X versions.  An ongoing discussion about what might be causing this is being looked at, by more than one person.  But as yet, nobody has been able to pin-point why some images under the X and the Windows versions are having problems, when the DOS version is still running very well.

It seems that new versions (stable and/or development) of FractInt
appear only every 2 years or so...

Jonathan Osuch has been the main person over the past few years to keep the modifications coming to both the DOS version and the Unix/Linux version.  He is available, and can be seen posting to, both the normal FractInt Discussion List (http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/fractint) and the FractInt Development List (http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/fractdev).

Some of the most recent updates have been:
  • 20.4.00 -- Oct. 24, 2004
  • 20.4.01 -- Apr. 23, 2005
  • 20.4.02 -- May 07, 2005
  • 20.4.03 -- Aug. 04, 2005
  • 20.4.04 -- Mar. 11, 2006
  • 20.4.05 -- May 19, 2007
  • 20.4.06 -- May 30, 2007
  • 20.4.07 -- Nov. 18, 2007
  • 20.4.08 -- May 15, 2008
  • 20.4.09 -- Oct. 12, 2008

So as you can see, updates come out quite often.    :D

Are there some other alternative group of programmers that develop
alternative versions of FractInt even under a different software name?

There is a workable MAC application that is fairly new, and has the ability to handle many of the .PAR, .FRM, and .MAP files from FractInt.  It is called Fracton and was written by Mike Frazier.  You can get the latest release from here:
    http://www.fracton.org/ (http://www.fracton.org/)

There is also one called ManPWin written by Paul de Leeuw.  This is a Windows version and is a high speed 32 bit program with true color support.  The latest release just came available on August 05, 2010, and can be obtained from here:
