Rectangular ambient occlusion (with directional elements)Rectagular Ambient Occlusion (location only)Power 8 Jellyfish
Rectagular Ambient Occlusion (location only)
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: Created using Ultra Fractal.

This demonstrates rectangular based ambient occlusion for using on Mandelboxes, Juliaboxes and any other roughly rectangular fractals.
The occlusion is based on the maximum of the distances of a point from the centre of the cuboid in each direction (x/y/z) so that the greatest occlusion occurs at the centre.

The method was suggested to me by Jos Leys.

This particular render is a version of "New Rome" based solely on the location based rectangular occlusion, in the actual "New Rome" render the occlusion also had a directional element added - see: http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=2062

Here's the original "New Rome" which also includes diffuse and specular light from two sources:
