This is a 3D version of  "Mandelbrot on real numbers" (but it's a Julia in this case).
You may want to take a look at one of the first posts I made here, when I started to work with fractal formulas and so on (I didn't know much about it back then  grin)

After squaring x,y,z values separately, scaling and adding the constant, the bailout test goes on abs(x+y-z) in this particular case (a bailout value of aprox. 1~2 must be used)

I don't have a DE system for this, so I wrote a very rudimentary rendering script with constant raymarching. It includes distance fog and a little bit of translucency.
I did some enhancements later with Photoshop.

I know the image is quite flat, but I kinda liked the result anyway.
