Thanks!  Yeah, I almost always try different combos of hard shadow vs ambient.   In this case, the hard shadow cut down my "shine" a little too much, coming off of the top-facing blocks.  But, yeah, I usually use hard shadow for realism.  I probably could have done the hard shadow, and then adjusted my lighting to get the shine back - but I was probably just being lazy...

Did you try rendering it with hard shadows?  I find it gives geometric structures a much more realistic 3D look.  And since this image is already pushing the mercury on the badassomometer...  Thought it might be worth suggesting.
