Fractalic Mystical Solution to Keplers Enigma

Description: I finally managed to get two of my fractal 3D sculptures printed on shapeways.

This is a small version of "Mysterium Cosmographicum Fractalium"

It is a weird feeling to hold something in your hand which has been hiding in the mist of mathematics until now… now it is a real world object! Mighty!

I will try to make a bigger more detailed print of it but it is not easy to make this object printable with lots of detail...

Mandelbulb 3D > Fiji > Meshlab > Netfabb

Wow, this is a great tip Jérémie!
I am afraid it won't help me with this model because it is not "solid" from the beginning but full of holes, don't know if one could do a DE-trick in MB3D to only get the "open surface" without inner holes... hmmmm....

OK, I didn't read your tip thoroughly... That second tip takes care of that part  afro

BIG THANKS J i'll try this out!

The thin wall problem is indeed the main one, and very frustrating because you can't benefit from the printer resolution (depends on materials, but generally around 0.1mm).

One way to circumvent this is to make a plain object (think Mandelbulb) and then make it hollow in Meshlab using the filter "Remeshing.../Uniform mesh resampling" with a negative offset (e.g -0.7;)) to create an inner shell, then invert its normals (the inner shell normals should point towards the center) and flatten the 2 meshes (inner and outer shell). This way, you can choose your wall thickness and keep maximum surface details. Of course, there is still the 1M faces limit but that's another story.

In order to remove all internal faces before doing this inner shell, you will want to use this tutorial: http://meshlabstuff.blogspot.de/2009/04/how-to-remove-internal-faces-with.html

Thank you Dan  A Beer Cup

I think your pendants would be perfect for 3D printing... only problem there might be is the one I run into all the time, THIN WALLS.
That is the main reason for the lack of detail, you have to set the DE stop high to avoid thin walls, this leads to less detail.

cant wait to print one of my pendants out , that way i can cast them, the only problem that the 3D are not extremely accurate yet, but i would love to see one of my pendants come alive wink  A Beer Cup A Beer Cup

I send you an answer!
Thank you Louis, it would be great to make it really big.
35 x 35 cm is possible on shapeways... But it is hard to get this box printable in that size.
