The coloring is part algorithmic ... my multifrequency thing. I control the basic palette and a few repeat periods and other parameters; the computer adds details and finer details. All of the Seahorse Odyssey images not only have the same center coords, but also the same color gradient from 0 iterations to over ten million.

As for the image quality: I think this one used 10x10 oversampling for non-noisy seahorse "eyes" and a general lack of moire. Part of the sharpness is from that; part from the gradient not leaving any areas to wash out with all (almost) the same color, while the oversampling prevents the details of the gradient making high iteration areas too noisy.
