Description: I consider this texture a significant improvement over my previous image. The Popgnarl texture did away with the "plastic" look of the bones, and made it look--IMHO--rugged. Although I believe the bones still need to look old and worn out, I guess I will try to achieve this in other images, as this one has successfully worn me out. cheesy

I also tweaked the iterations, taking off several vertebrae and leaving it open in the end. Looks more realistic to me this way.

Finally, I also managed to create a "shadow" layer, which in my humble and inexpert opinion doesn't look too bad at all.

What do you guys think? Once again, I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Hi Duncan,

I used Ultra Fractal version 4 to create the image.

This is a very cool image. What app did you use to create it?

Sure!

I created a layer with one single color, matching the darkest color of the ground layer (brownish/ochre). I reduced six vertebrae in the beginning (it starts at iteration 50 instead of 44, which is the beginnig of the other layers) I used "Last" as the trapping mode, instead of first. I rotated and dislocated it a little, simulating light coming from an angle from the back.

Finally, I added an increasing transparent region matching as exactly as possible the lightest region of the gradient, giving the illusion that the shadow "fades" at the borders.

Here is a screencap of the layer, the gradient and the iteration parameters:

Does this help? Do you know of a better/more realistic way of doing it?
