Description: I finally managed to get two of my fractal 3D sculptures printed on shapeways. This is a small version of "Mysterium Cosmographicum Fractalium" ![]() It is a weird feeling to hold something in your hand which has been hiding in the mist of mathematics until now… now it is a real world object! Mighty! I will try to make a bigger more detailed print of it but it is not easy to make this object printable with lots of detail... bib | January 29, 2013, 04:13:21 PM The thin wall problem is indeed the main one, and very frustrating because you can't benefit from the printer resolution (depends on materials, but generally around 0.1mm). One way to circumvent this is to make a plain object (think Mandelbulb) and then make it hollow in Meshlab using the filter "Remeshing.../Uniform mesh resampling" with a negative offset (e.g -0.7;)) to create an inner shell, then invert its normals (the inner shell normals should point towards the center) and flatten the 2 meshes (inner and outer shell). This way, you can choose your wall thickness and keep maximum surface details. Of course, there is still the 1M faces limit but that's another story. That is the main reason for the lack of detail, you have to set the DE stop high to avoid thin walls, this leads to less detail. |
