A different way of coloring distance estimator images. This one uses a DE greyscale layer as a mask, essentially, over a smoothed-iterations layer. The result is that the brightness depends on both iterations and being close to the set, while the hue depends on iterations only; areas more than a pixel from the set are black. Basically, it's as if only pixels touching the boundary are colored non-black, and then the whole is massively antialiased.

Detailed statistics:

Name: The Core
Date: December 23, 2009
Fractal: Mandelbrot
Location: Spike.
Depth: Deep (34 decimals)
Min Iterations: 1079
Max Iterations: 239,172
Layers: 2
Anti-aliasing: 3x3, threshold 0.10, depth 1
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Calculation time: 8 hours (2.5GHz dual-core E5200)

This would be great as a painting or decoration for the inside of a rotunda (maybe even a planetarium).    wink

Thanks. Yeah, maybe. It's interesting to combine DE with other coloring methods.
