Dear fellow fractal explorers,

I was wondering if someone can tell me why Mandelbulber v2 is crashing often on my system (freezes and bsod's). V1 works fine though, with minimal crashes.

My specs are a FX8350, 8gb ddr3 ram and a HD6850 (1gb).

Will a better graphics card and more ram give me a stable system, i wonder.

So if someone has a tip or two they are more them welcome.

Which operating system do you use? Do you use 32-bit or 64-bit version of application? Which version of application do you test? Is this the latest one (2.08-3)?
If you are getting BSOD, I will look if your PC is working properly (overheating, damaged RAM or HDD, virus). Even if application crash it never should generate BSOD (except situation of not enough RAM memory when page file is disabled).

Yes, it's the latest version. And i'm running win 7 64 bit. I've just trown 8 gigs of extra ram in my system (1600 mhz, 9-9-9-24) to see if it helps... total of 16 now. I'll post my observations. I must say that any other high demanding programs like games never crash. But, i just recently found out that my ram was not configured properly in my bios...not the right timing and speed.

On "Rendering engine tab" there are "distance estimation method" and "distance estimation function" comboboxes. By default there is selected "Preferred" which automatically selects the best method for actual set of selected fractal formulas. But you can change it to linear or logarithmic with deltaDE. Below that selection there is information which method is actually used during rendering (e.g. if Preferred is selected)

Thanks Buddhi, i've found it. And i am happy to say that since the adapted ram timing speed in my bios and the extra 8g ram, i've had no crashes what so ever. I guess i'm fine for now... only i wonder..  would a grand gpu offer faster speeds?

Actually Mandelbulber v2 doesn't use GPU. So even if you have super mega hiper GPU it will not help.
Implementation of GPU support (OpenCL) is on our TODO list, but it will take a lot of time to do it (next year)

And when, will it work the same as in v1 or can it handle multiple fractals (hybrids), because the formula editing was kinda difficult for me anyway. Nontherless i don't care, it seems that you are a piece of mandelbulber and therefore i think you are a god. I would build a mandelbulber church if possible. Thank you, if you would like an interesting fractal image please let me know, i will send you my very best.

Hybrids

Fractal dock - hybrid tab - enable hybrid fractals

tick any extra formula  slots you want to use and choose the fractals or transforms from the drop down menus.

Thats the simple bit, the rest needs a lot of documentation to explain

You can look at this and the following post

as far as Mandelbulber v2 crashes.  My current status using Ubuntu OS.

I have had the updating of render window problem I think once in the last two months. I can also crash the program sometimes when using "fog based on distance" when I press the "Optimal distances calculation"  button.
