OK...

simply use divx, they are bugging with some registration forms, but there is a fre version of that codec available,
all the videos on fractalmovies.com are coded with divx since divx3, i am not aware of the current codec market,
but give it a try grin

So I downloaded divX.

Now I have to get rid of firefox!!

It will not uninstall the google crap!!!

I went through the program folders and deleted everything related to google and search stuff and toolbars, but it all came right back!!

google are evil incarnate and I flatly refuse to have Evil touch my Art!!!!

Am I doomed to lose firefox over this??

It's better than being supportive of google at all.  Ever.

I like firefox, though.

Anyone else ever have this problem?

It's not enough to hide the google crap.

If I can't remove it - firefox goes.

WAAAA!

Whats the problem with Google??

I was out sick when you asked.

User Error !!     evil

Nope, it's not user error...  it's Personal!

I had a website years ago, with a nonsense word for the url.

Naturally, I checked for the nonsense word in search engines just for fun.

Within hours yahoo found the site.  Within days everyone - ask jeeves, lycos, and every other search engine I could find would return the usual listing for the site.

Except google!!

After a month, I sent google an email asking why they couldn't find my site.  They were supposed to be such a great search engine, I had to know what was up.

They told me I never submitted the site, so they never indexed it.

Sounded fishy to me, but I bit anyhow - and asked how to submit my site.

The instructions included PAYING A FEE!!!

I was outraged.

How DARE they call themselves a search engine when everyone else found my site, but they only list things people pay them to list!!

I thought it was Extortion to demand Money for their service to find my little website!!  When all the engine had to do was put the search term in between www. and .com!!  All the other engines figured it out.

That started it.

Long after that, they started another Evil Campaign - this digital library where they want to steal everyone's books, copyrighted works or not.  And whether the authors consented or not!!  I found it funny that they called it a compromise when they EXPECTED the courts to completely reverse copyright law for them by saying that any author, anywhere in the world who does not want their works would have to send them an "opt-out" letter.

Sorry.

That's not how copyright works.  The answer should have been for anyone who wants in to "opt-in" or else they risk people getting included who never heard of the project but would object anyhow.

But that's another, very long, story.

I maintain my anti-google stand.  I am invisible to them while browsing, and anything that has their logo displayed, or a built in link to them which I can not remove from my site and my system is not a thing I wish to support.  I can't use the Opera Browser for this reason.  Damn google search field is linked to the address field can't be removed except by hiding the address bar too.  I value the address bar when using the internet - can't type url's without it!!  So I simply can't use Opera.

Their loss.  I have many options.  (by the way, DivX was uninstalled - It's not their place to hijack my browser!!)

Evil must be Fought!  I only have anything to do with them when I am getting paid by a website to help them, and they are interested in gathering keyword data for and from google.

I don't expect to sway anyone else with thee arguments (too many folks think google are nice) but I still have my Principles, and wont support google in any way, shape, or form.

...

Wow...

Fun with 3 year old threads!

Nope, it's not user error...  it's Personal!

I do believe that all personal problems really are user problems (or errors).   evil

I had a website years ago, with a nonsense word for the URL.

There are thousands (probably millions) of Domain Names that have never had to submit anything to get "listed" within Google.  Nor did they have to pay a fee.  I never did either of those things for any Domain Name and/or hosted web site I established, and they all showed up when doing a search using Google.  And my first site was established in 1994, with another in 1997.

Which means there must be something else going on here than what you have described, for example:
  •  What was this "nonsense word" you attempted to use ??
  •  What was the actual web site address you wanted listed ??

I believe this to be another example of "user error".

Once I started a little website for my aunt through Googlepages (when it was still called that). In order to get it into the search results, I sent the URL to Google to be included. As far as I can tell, you can still do that - for free! Look at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=34397. "Free" is the operative word in the first sentence.

I read the article more. I can't find anything about submitting it. Weird. When did this happen, anyway?

This was about a decade ago, when I first got the internet in my home  (I know, late comer!) (I have had a personal computer pretty much constantly since 1977, but never had any desire for the internet until around the year 2000!)  (I still have a working Tandy TI 90 Computer!).

The site was mostly just a host for personal things and had no links to or from other sites, so it was pretty much a stand alone thing (they list that as a possible cause for them not finding the site now) (but it's still no excuse!! - Everyone else found it!).  I was using the site only to learn, and host files.

The nonsense word was nothing naughty or adult in nature, so that should have had no bearing  (if you know me, you know that is a distinct possibility!) (but not this time).

And back then there was Definitely a $5 fee to submit a site!  I recall arguing with them about it.  A rep said that "$5 was a small fee and should be no big deal."  To which I replied that if $5 was no big deal then he'd have no problem waiving it, or paying it for me.

Never got a reply to that one.

Maybe they changed that policy now.   Good for them.

Reading the page linked to, it seems clear that the lack of external links played a large role.  But again, why couldn't they just stick the nonsense word in between www. and .com to find a site with that name?  Like all the Real search engines did?

They even give tips on how to code your site to help them find it!  As if I should have to code my site in a particular way to have the honor of turning up in a google search result.  When the search term was the site's URL.  And when *ALL* the other search engines could figure it out.  I find that to be ...  well...  Fascist!

They did eventually find the site.  Sort of.  6 Months later - they returned the results from Yahoo's Cache!!  But they never actually found the site itself.

I've sworn by Yahoo's search engine ever since and never looked back (except to remove google from my systems and find ways to block everything google from my browsers!).

I just don't trust that sort of business model!

As for Software that insists on hijacking my browser and other things for the benefit of google - I use one or two such products now, but only on my Art Computer, which has never been, and never will be, connected to the internet.

So no YouTube anymore for you?
And what would you have done if Google had succeeded to buy Yahoo!?

I have to compromise somewhere, I guess.

I only block things with their name on it.  Youtube is what I think of as a subsidiary - they function just fine with all the google analytics and such blocked, and only allowing the youtube and ytimg domains through.

It's just anything with google.com in it that I block!

They may own the world someday, but I'll still block their core site and it's directly related stuff out of spite! devil
