i'm used to play with blender + luxrender when i want to pla with 3D stuff.
But Blender is painfull SLOW  cry when i open a 500k face .obj (it freeze a lot) while most (all but Google Sketchup, actually) other software handle them easily.

Anyone know fast-enough modeler that can handle high quality rendering (with a preference for luxrender or indigorenderer) that doesn't cost $500+ (and most of them are well above $1k) and can handle many-face voxel-stacked-object ?

i started to test some of them (trial, demo, freeware, ...).
I'll post my review asap, but so far i haven't found anything that please me.

indigorenderer handle :
- sketchup : can't open huge objects
- blender : too slow !!
- Revit : not test, insanely expensive
- C4D : not tested, insanely expensive
- 3DS Max : not tested, insanely expensive
- Maya : not tested, insanely expensive

luxrender handle :
- blender : too slow
- 3DS Max : not tested, insanely expensive
- sketchup : can't open huge objects
- C4D : not tested, insanely expensive
- DAZ Studio 4 : currently testing it. i could open/manipulate fractal object without slowdown, but it's all about character modelling. (the plugin cost $80: http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=13789 )
- Carrara 8 : there is a rumor about a future Cararra 8 plugin to render to luxrender
- XSI : not tested, insanely expensive
- Poser : not tested.

Edit : ok, i think i understand about DAZ Studio 4. the free version is just/mostly for simple character creation (basically, you buy item on the DAZ market and assemble it in the Free DAZ version). However the pro version look like a real modeler.

So I'm obviously biased, but we also offer Indigo RT at a much lower price than the full Indigo Renderer, with a few features removed: http://www.indigorenderer.com/product-comparison

Chaotica has already been made a Glare Technologies product, and will eventually integrate with Indigo for high-end 3D fractal rendering. This is when support for volume grids will be added smiley

hooooo  surprised testing chaotica right now !

edit : ho ok. it's super high quality rendering of apophysis stuff. Hum... i'm not a fan of flames stuff  cry
edit 2 : i love it  grin
