Hi how about a monthly 'competition' to render up a logo for the main banner at the top of FF?

I'd impose the following rules

- must be a fractal
- size: broadly what it is now - 731 x 102px
- filesize: less than 25k (current one is 10516 bytes)
- filetype: jpg / gif
- must contain the fractalforums + the possibilities are infinite wordings pretty much as is now (see template for exact detail)
- must be your own work
- can show your FF userID but not site URL
- no offensive imagery

Questions:

- Who decides? It would be a bit bland I think if I alone could vote.  Options: all registered users (open vote) / moderators (closed vote)
- When is the decision made? eg last day of month
- Every month, will there be a theme to adhere to - the 'winner' picking the next theme (or themes)

Just thought it could be a bit of fun  smiley

See attachment for: Photoshop example template, and transparent GIF example template.

Might want to wait on this until we have more artsy folks around...monthly is pretty often, and the same three or four people will end up hogging all the glory. Meanwhile, if you care for a little dress-up, I can create a unique theme or two. Brots and all that would go nice. (That's a very incomplete beginning sketch.) BTW, I made the text logo image separate from the fractally background there, and it doesn't hang over in a smaller browser window. ("broadly" tee-hee)

Nothing as extravagantly heavy as my first experiment in fractal forum skinning, I think.  smiley That monstrous concoction is on a par with a lot of game-kiddy forums I've seen - not my idea of a good default "skin" but it was an interesting exercise to make  cheesy

A nice idea...but monthly is at the moment indeed to often. But I will certainly give it a try when it is decided to go on with it.

I would think that quarterly would suffice for changing the logo, even if there were hundreds of members available to participate in submitting possibilities.  Running a monthly competition might become a major amount of effort.

And to keep the logos from being created by the same group of individuals over a long period of time, there should be some type of stipulation as to how often a previous "winner" is allowed to submit new entries.  In this way, you could get a larger sampling of logos by different individuals.

And if there were a sub-category in this forum for showing the submissions, then each "quarter period" could be a sub-category under that so as to be a "gallery" of all submissions for that time period.

...I think it would be better if you can't see who made a contribution. So, no names in the image until after the voting.

Yes, I agree !!!     cheesy

Some questions that this leads to are:
  • Where do they get submitted to, so they will NOT show who the contributor was??
  • Can this be controlled within a sub-category of this Forum??
  • Will we need to establish a separate website to handle this??

I don't think SMF will support anonymous posts - I'm not going to turn on guest permissions for posting.

My only suggestion would be to create another user account (a 'shadow' account) which you could use for posting competition entries.  If you 'won' then either stay anonymous or PM the judges.

Sounds like the only way at this point to handle anonymous submissions for a Logo Competition.

After the winner was chosen, it would no longer matter if the "artist" was known, and all submitted entries could be displayed with their author's name (and optionally, the software application).

There is an alternative...

* send entries to one person ( with admin rights and no voting rights)
* that person displays the entries on the site with a number.
* all members can vote on a number (except one...)
* after the voting names can be published

How does this sound?

Yes, of course, this would solve some problems, but it could lead to more work for the designated volunteer, especially depending on the number of submissions.  And it would also mean that each submission would need to be verified that it came from a Forum Member and not just anyone, which is a good reason for doing by Membership into the Forum.

And how many images could any one Member be allowed to submit??

       *   all members can vote on a number (except one...)
       *   after the voting, names can be published

If there were not too many images submitted for a vote, the Poll section of this Forum could be used to automatically tally the votes.
