Why is each new image being made into a separate new forum topic?

Surely the gallery is for individual images, the forum topics are for discussions.

Otherwise the latest posts section gets swamped with images (as superb as they are).

Suggestion: Click on the Profile link at the top of any page. Then at the left, under Modify Profile, click on Recent Posts Preferences. Now you can uncheck the image-dominated boards you don't want included in your homepage's Recent Posts listing. Be sure to click the Change Profile button at the lower right before leaving the page.

thx ken for the suggestion, the posting of images is there, so that images get recognized, although they are locked ( this is due to drag discussion directly to the image) it gives a good impression on what is going on

that the new posts section is getting bigger and bigger isnot my fault wink

If I post a discussion the topic gets lost for most people after half a day, due to 10 new images, doesn't that discourage discussions?

Maybe there could be a 'latest images' section next to the 'latest posts' section?

Also, anyone else think the latest posts section would be better at the top of the home page?

Just ideas...  angel

OK last try...
The 'recent posts preferences' does not change the posts actually seen when you look through them (http://www.fractalforums.com/index.php?action=recent).
Why should I be looking at single images when browsing forum topics? An image isn't a forum topic. When I want to look at images I go to the gallery.
If you want the images advertised more then show 'recent images from gallery' on the home page.

it is true, i will think of it for a little while longer, and then make a decision on how to keep it biased between, notifications of new
images, and notifications of real threads, i for myself miss most of the images that are not posted as topics in the gallery,
because many users use their own galleries, which do not get translated into postings, so, already a huge amount of images
is "lost" because they arent mentioned in the forum, i will look out for a way to include them on the welcome page of the forum,
and the posting as new topic feature will then be used only for selected events, e.g. like the spring competition

but it wont happen any time soon, it will happen when i know how to include the recent images list on the gallery in the template,
it could be easy as calling the gallery boxing-function as it is done in the gallery page, and due to the fact that we do not own
a development server, it has to be done on a custom template, to not interfere with current users in the forums, because
the template files are so big, that everytime a 100kb php template file is uploaded after editing, it produces page loading
faults for a severe amount of users, and i dont want this to happen

but as you see, a little development environment has to be set up by me

any user able to comment on smf forums template programming and specially the gallery that we are using here is welcome
to post tips here in this topic

I agree it's nice to see images in the recent topics section, but also can't argue that sometimes the images get quite numerous.

Still, there should be an effort made at striking a balance.  I post at an art forum which has a very busy gallery and they limit gallery posts to 3 per day per user.

Given that just recently we had one user post many images in rapid succession, I understand the complaint.  But I still think that gallery posts should be linked to the boards or it becomes too difficult to see them all.

So why not look into somehow limiting the gallery posts per day?  Not sure if it's easily done, but it's worth looking into.

I still miss many images that people post as attachments because they don't appear in the recent posts section, only in the threads themselves.

Whatever the group feels is best is fine with me.  But I do like the balance of images and discussion created when people don't abuse the gallery and there is a nice mix of Art and Discussion.  So I again propose limiting Gallery posts to 3 per day.  That should prevent outbreaks like the most recent one   police

I agree about a daily limitation. 3 pieces should be enough. In any case, it's always possible to attach pictures directly in a post if this is for tchnical or informational purposes rather than artisitic submissions.

Another suggestion I got in PM by another user: if the image is too big, automatically convert it to the maximum allowed format. Some forums do that. Is that technically possible with the current version of the gallery software Christian?

yay, but it seems to be solved now smiley

regarding resizing of images, this is not possible, because the max usable memory is limited on the current server, which means that
if an image is to big the server produces an non interceptable error, which is the main reason for the limiting of the image sizes,
secondary is web-space, i know that big images can be of small file sizes, but generating a thumbnail would also produce a memory error
