hi all, we consider making the "third section" of this years compo based on public poll to meet most public interest. right now the compo will feature the "classic" sections "wild style" and "film" before we start a poll post a bunch of suggestions on what the third section will be, so far we have the following: - deep zoom mandelbrot ( a minimum/maximum zoom depth is given, find the nicest spot) - predefinded mandelbrot location - tune it up with whatever coloring you like - resemblance (real life resemblance, suggestions please) - create a fractal given baseshapes (triangle+quad arrange any way you like ) - letters of alphabet in mandelbrot - visualise forums slogan: "the possibilities are infinite" - explore a single formula that is predefined e.g. "amazingSurf" (warning, this formula has to be available within many softwares) so this is our curent suggestion list, please spill out more and then we start a poll one month before compo starts!

Interesting ideas there.
One I have is to take the standard mandelbrot and do something with it e.g. tweak it in some way. You could make a plugin or formula for an existing program (Fractal eXtreme, FractInt, UltraFractal, etc.) and until the deadline when the competition ends you have to keep the code secret, but as soon as possible afterwards you have to add a comment which shows your code. Therefore, it can then be shown that you did indeed start off with the mandelbrot, but your formula doesn't become an inspiration to others until after the competition closes.
I guess this would be quite difficult to implement.

To anyone viewing my posts and finding missing/broken links to a website called www.needanother.co.uk, I still own the domain but recently cancelled my server (saving £30/month) so even though the domain address exists, it points nowhere. I hope to one day sort something out but for now - sorry!

one idea of this discussion is to find the broadest possible topic, for once my admin collagues pointed out that even deep zoom mandelbrot zooms using kalles fractaler or such are not widely enough accepted-known so your suggestions seems for me to be a very special kind with very few participants, but we might include it as poll option, thank you

Another option is to generate the unzoomed mandelbrot on any possible medium, electronic or otherwise.
This could become very creative - an old dot matrix printer, a ZX Spectrum and print the output to a thermal printer, display it on a photo keyring, build it out of lego, make it from carpet tiles, create one using dominoes stood on end and set them off toppling, look in the sky and find it in a cloud formation, etc., etc., etc.

Do you begin more early the next compo? If the users was allowed to posting anything at "Competition and content" chapter and "The 3d Mandelbulb - let's posting videos, theory, implementations" chapter without risques of disqualifications no, the early starts as usual every year at 1st of may. this is just a public discussion about what to challenge this year

This has possibilities for Fractal Footwear! How do you like my new Sandalbrots? I guess maybe I am suggesting a Fractal Humor category where any form of Fractal Silliness is the idea.

- create a fractal given baseshapes (triangle+quad arrange any way you like ) Huh? Explain the idea is: given a set of base geometry, create some sort of algorithm that lays them out iteratively by some rules, e.g. 1. place triangle 2. place quads on each vertex of triangle 3. replace triangles on each vertex of quads 4. continue with 2 hehe it is a little to tricky for broad acceptance but i thought i could include it for discussion

Those sandalbrots do not look comfy at all. That's just a rough sketch. I'll make the luxury pair if it ends up a contest entry.

However, I think the constraint would be too strong for a competition. All that could possibly be done is to use coloring algorithms and gradients that affect the iteration bands in some way. I reckon there exist awesome coloring methods and they matter a lot to what a fractal looks like, but still... I would prefer something more general. A participant could even not like the location. -We have done axolotl resemblance before, other than that I do like the idea of resemblance but I would now vote for something else. -Creating a fractal with baseshapes: nice idea. We could judge the entries by several aspects: interestingness, beauty, the way the base shapes were put to use. This sets a theme but allows a lot of freedom. I assume the final renders count, thereby including use of various visualisation techniques, and not just the bare algorithms?

Well. But it's posted at this topic without risque of disqualification. I'm believed that to posting here mean cheating if the compos wasn't began.

I don't understand your question. The 2015 section does not exist at this point, so nobody can post anything there yet! You can't mean my Fractal Hats and Sandalbrot images since they were posted after you asked - plus, they were mostly joke images anyhow, despite my willingness to have them become real categories!) Please link to the posts which are causing you confusion instead of just saying they exist. Then we can better explain where the misunderstanding comes from.

Well, this discussion seems to have quieted down a bit! So... I had an idea for a theme to use with the video section instead of just letting it be completely free form in subject matter. I do prefer fewer guidelines, but some may want a more narrow theme, so here is a suggestion... How about videos featuring no camera movements, but focus instead on morphing other parameters? This may be tougher on 2D Fractals, but still possible. Just a thought more focused on prompting more discussions rather than one that I think will be used
