just a little note to a relaxed discussion.
i use several tools to protect myself against malware, phishing, spam, thievery of private data and so on, but imho the most effective protection against all those threats is called brain 1.0  wink

about facebook and social networking in general i'm split minded, because you only have two options. participate or do not. there is no way of using a little bit of facebook  fiery
especially the like buttons are real crap! they send data to fb central just when you open a website - no need to push the button.
a little example:
i bought a new bike online in january (as the are really cheap in winter). i visited noumerous pages, who sell bikes, just to get the best offer. i never hit one of those like buttons but regardless i get various bike advertising on facebook since then. i think fb (or anybody else) should not have the right to collect such data without my dedicated permission, but the only way to prevent, is not to use facebook. all those neat little privacy setteings are useless when it comes to advertising.
so i can really understand all those, who say: facebook? no thanks!

Also, if you want to earn money and opportunities considering what you do, why wouldn't you put your company logo, your property, on a facebook or google page?

If you really need to be told that Ethics are more Important than Making Money, you must be very young.

Also, if you want to ear money and opportunities considering what you do, why wouldn't you put your company logo, your property, on a facebook or google page?

Question : if money is more important than Ethics, why bother buying software you can easily download from pirate sites?  Or why bother paying for television or movie tickets when you can do the same to get it all free?

Answer : Because it is supporting Evil if you do so.

I refuse to support Evil in ANY incarnation.  Including facebook, and even google!

I even had to give up my youtube channel because they suddenly required you to log in with a google account and if you didn't have one - you could not log in.  That is Bullcrap and I will NEVER support ANYTHING I find to be Evil.  So now I use Vimeo for my videos.

It's no loss for me, and I can sleep peacefully knowing that I stand up for my beliefs and do not compromise on boycotting Evil.

Actually, if you live from what you do, you are in the way for a better living, and that is ethics.

And you are not supporting evil by using pirate stuff, you are just not supporting the artists that actually made the work. And, guess what, if you buy the stuff, you are supporting - if they get lucky - 10% of the artist work. That is the real evil.

Is being out of topic an unethical evil thing?

Look kid, since it appears your ignorance is exceeded only by your arrogance, I will attempt to Educate you.

You seem to equate facebook and social media with a better life.  That is pure folly, barely worthy of a reply, but I'll do so anyhow.

...

No I wont.  If you can't see the absurdity of that all by yourself, nothing I say will convince you otherwise.

Your so-called ethics seem centered around personal gain and "a better life" - but that better life is for you and only you.  If it makes your life better by hurting others, you seem insensitive to that harm because you gain from it in the end.

As for not supporting Evil by pirating stuff - you are fooling yourself.  Who do you think gets all the money generated by illegal downloads?  They make a lot of money by using file hosts who pay for each download, and the beneficiaries are all criminals - some are mere copyright violators, others are actually terrorists.  The argument that torrents do not do that is equally ignorant.  The sites which host their "Torrent Trackers" generate money from traffic.  Many advertisers use the traffic to analyze what people are posting and reading, google ad-words being a prime example.  And that does not even mention the viruses spread by a small percentage of pirates, viruses which are Definitely Evil and create those armies of zombie computers which are used in mass denial of service attacks.

Pirating online DOES support Evil.  Believing otherwise is simply willful ignorance.

I fight piracy as part of my online work, and know for a fact that google ad-words and other revenue generating advertising tools are found on many pirate sites.

And the people I work for are independent producers of short film clips which they sell for a living.  They are proof that you are DEAD WRONG about not hurting the Artists.  They are burdened with all production costs, promotion of clips, and sales of clips, plus every other aspect of making their living this way.  It is proven that when a new clip comes out it sells well right up to the point it hits the pirate market.  Then sales plummet.  So by keeping their content out of the hands of pirates as long as possible they do much better.

I find it Terribly Offensive when people assume that stealing is OK and try to justify it by saying that they are only stealing a little bit.  You said 10% at most goes to the Artists.  GIVE ME 10% OF YOUR INCOME!!  NOW!!

See?  Not so trivial anymore is it?  In actuality, the losses often far exceed 10% depending on circumstances.

You've already said that you can't be bothered to read a user agreement, but all the sites you love reserve the right to steal your work.  If I mailed you an image for your little contest, you would be forbidden by me to re-post it on facebook because they would then have the right to use it however they see fit.

Have they done so yet?  I don't care!  It does not matter.  What matters is they reserve the right to do so.  And that is EVIL.

Moreso than worrying about the virtues of Facebook and such, I shy away from contests which seem as if their purpose is to amass a collection of work for potential commercial use.  Quite often it's so much cheaper for the promoter of a contest to give away a handful of mediocre prizes and walk away with a pile of quality images to use than it is to just commission an artist and pay a fair market value for a CD cover or what not.
