Could it be, that reason why M3D version 1.82 don't works on Windows 2K is simply that compiler (as it is) don't supports Windows 2K? Micro$oft don't supports oldest operation systems so that users eventualy must upgrade their PC to never $oftware  fiery, which very rarely have some usefull new features beyond different interface, but helps them to earn more. Sometimes it could not have some service .dll-s or something.

I can use M3D 1.82 in Windows ME only because I have the KernelEx compatibility layer installed which allows to run some programs thay normally wouldn't run on my platform because newer, incompatible compilers have been used to make those programs. With that I just have one minor issue with M3D 1.82 when saving an image as png, I get an access violation error message but when I click on the message to dismiss it, then the file saves OK.

You can check for missing dlls and unresolved functions with the free tool dependency walker but I don't think you'll find anything missing as nothing is missing on my Windows ME system which should be less compatible than yours.

I know there are a couple of unofficial kernel extensions for Windows 2000 allowing programs compiled only for XP and above to run normally under Windows 2000 so that might perhaps be a solution for you. I am not familiar with them however as I don't use Windows 2000 but you'll be able to find them through google or the MSFN forum and then try them out.
