Seahorse spiral
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: A fairly typical Mandelbrot set spiral from Seahorse valley.

This image was rendered using distance estimates to plot the neighborhood of the Mandelbrot set in black, and then using histogram-based coloring and fractional iteration values to plot the exterior in a gradient from white to red. I added a sinusoidal variation in brightness, which gives the red-white gradient a wavy look.

Maximum iterations:   5000
Center Point (real, imaginary):   -0.74519,   0.11267 i
Plot Width (real):   0.00143

Paul,

I don't see why it would be disqualified. It's a single layer, using only one color scheme. The DE based coloring only influences the color of pixels that are very near to a Mandelbrot point, and outside that range, the influence of DE drops to zero and the iteration value determines a pixel's color.

The image looks nice, but isn't combining two different outside coloring methods going to disqualify it?
